DISCLAIMER: I have a financial interest in Reef Rite products. Thanks for mentioning the Kiwi Slides, John. I took over the role as the North American importer for them from the late Brian Cleverly a number of years ago. The website is www.reefrite-na.com, and I'll be happy to answer any questions off-list. We used Kiwi Slides on our Cal 29, "Pentaquod". The thing that I loved about the slides (long before I took over importing them) is that you have all the control of a hanked-on sail, but with the convenience of roller furling when you want it. Let me also point out that the slides come in different sizes, and can work with other furlers. You do not need to have a Reef Rite furler to use the Kiwi Slides. The reef rite downloader system allows for quick change of sails. Check out their website. I like their design on the reefing system. John Raxter Venture Construction 336-210-8073 (m)

I looked at the reefrite site and am trying to figure out the slide capture. Is it just a gate that can open and close so the slides stay on when lowered, then you open the gate and pull the slides out when you're ready to stow the sail? I thought I saw a system where there was a removable section of track that you left the slides on. You had a track section dedicated to each sail and you just clipped on the track and raised the sail. The "Downloader" is specific to Reef Rite furlers, and it creates a gate by rotating an opening to provice access to the foil slots to load or remove a sail (either luff tape or Kiwi Slides), and then rotates around to create a continuous foil slot so that the sail cannot be removed. Other furlers have other designs, such as a removable tapered opening that makes it easier to feed a luff tape into the foil slots.
