anyone know about these? ours is having fits. I contacted Garmin and was told I needed to upgrade the software. I bought their update chip, followed directions, but it says I should find an "update software" option to select after the chip is installed, and none shows up.

1. With my Garmin, you connect the unit to the internet through your Data cable to computer to Garmin. Then run the updater software available at Garmin. This updates the firmware, software and maps to current versions.
2. I know Garmin's National Trainer, and will ask if there is another "fix".
The updater is at:

I had a problem with mine, it froze up. Called Garmin. They give me a procedure for a hard reset?
"Well, your first action should be to try and reset your Garmin device. Just press the reset button, which is located near the SN#. You can also try to just turn off the device and then turn it back on. The only problem with using the power button is that sometimes the button won’t work at all if the device is frozen. You may be forced to do a hard reset."
If your Garmin GPS won’t turn on at all, you must perform a hard reset. Take a pencil or paper clip, and poke the reset button. Hold it down for a few seconds, and wait for the device to turn on.
May help?

Reggie,
I'm not sure what the symptom is... I just got off line with the Garmin National Trainer, and neither he or I can determine what you are fighting.
1. I see you bought an update card (free on the internet).
2. Was the machine running before that?
3. What is it doing now?
4. Do you have an SD card reader in your laptop? (many do)
5. Where you updating the charts or the firmware?
6. Why did the person tell you to ship it back?
Do you have the link to the internet that describes the update procedure>?

Timm
If he has a PC he can place the card into the PC and look for a file inside the Garmin folder which says GUPDATE.
If he has that then when he installs the card he will get a image like the attached.( this is a shot from a GPSmap 740 but its more or less the same.
If he does not then he can go to Go to Configure>System>System information ( there should then be a option for update software)
If this does not work he will need to download the most current version from here http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=4763 and then extract the file to a blank SD card.
He can use the card that Garmin sent him just as long as he is 100000000% sure that he did not order a chart card.
As far as the chart card he should NOT be using his chart card for any user data.
Also he needs to make sure that the SD card lock is not ON.
If this does not work let me know and just maybe I could do some screen shots or a video of what should happen.
Something is up

First Problem. the unit powers up, and i agree to terms. then, I go to a page and it jumps back out to an error page saying "transducer disconnected, Sonar turned off". If i select "OK", it goes back to the page I was on, for a second or more, then back to the error. If I am on the navigation page showing charts plus sonar, I get speed, depth, picture on screen, etc before it jumps bacc to the error. If I keep hitting "Select", I can get current glimpses of what my status is before it goes back to the error. this is the original problem for which I contacted Garmin and was told I needed to do a software update b efore doing anything else.
Several folks have suggested downloading the info to a card in my computer, but it does nothave a slot for that size card. Neither do I have a cable to connect from my computer to the 420s.
I spoke with allison in product support. She says my card slot must be bad because it will not read the update card nor will it read the updated map card I bought some time back. she says i should send it in for repairs and both problems would be dealt with.

How do know if my SD card is locked?
Most SD cards have a switch on the edge of one side of the card. Sliding it up or down will unlock or lock the card. When the card is locked, you will not be able to transfer any audio tracks. Nor will you be able to play any copy protected files. We recommend you always keep the card unlocked.
NOTE: We have found that on some cards, if the slider is even halfway towards the lock position, the card will be locked. Make sure that the slider is all the way to the UN-locked position.

Reggie,
I'm not sure what the symptom is...

I had a problem with mine, it froze up. Called Garmin. They give me a procedure for a hard reset?
"Well, your first action should be to try and reset your Garmin device. Just press the reset button, which is located near the SN#. You can also try to just turn off the device and then turn it back on. The only problem with using the power button is that sometimes the button won't work at all if the device is frozen. You may be forced to do a hard reset."
If your Garmin GPS won't turn on at all, you must perform a hard reset. Take a pencil or paper clip, and poke the reset button. Hold it down for a few seconds, and wait for the device to turn on.
May help?

How do know if my SD card is locked?
Most SD cards have a switch on the edge of one side of the card. Sliding it up or down will unlock or lock the card. When the card is locked, you will not be able to transfer any audio tracks. Nor will you be able to play any copy protected files. We recommend you always keep the card unlocked.
NOTE: We have found that on some cards, if the slider is even halfway towards the lock position, the card will be locked. Make sure that the slider is all the way to the UN-locked position.

no idea. don't know how to do that. the instructions say:
1. power up
2.agree
3.insert card.
4.select "update Software" This option never shows up.
A second set of instructions came from Garmin. It said "insert card, then hold down up arrow, then also hold down power until "holding" shows on screen
". I never made it past that point, even after holding both for a slow 60 count no "holding" or anything else besides "Garmin " ever showed up.

Okay
I tested this so it should work.
With the unit off.
Disconnect the depth transducer at the plug about 18" from the back of the display
Keeping the unit turned off insert the Garmin update card in the unit.
Press and hold the cursor up and power at the same time.
The unit will come on and say boot block. Then holding. Then software loading. Keep holding all this time. After about 30 seconds release all keys and the unit should start.
Once on go and check the version.
Configure>system>system information. I suspect it will be either 5.30 or higher.
If not and no errors remove card. Then with the unit still on insert the card. Should get a pop up and a option to update software. Select and let the unit do its thing. After the unit restarts double check the version. Should be 5.30 or higher .
Turn unit off. Remove card.
Reconnect transducer.
Turn unit on.
Should have no errors.
If you still get an error I would suspect cable or transducer. Leaning more towards a transducer since the unit works without the transducer connected.
Sorry about the fone email but I left my pc at the office and wanted to make sure I followed through with this task.
They will be doing a forced update. If they miss the key up and power sequence they can kill power and retry but like I said I tested this and it does work.

on the second method, no "update software" popped up.
Perhaps Allison was correct about it not being able to read a card?

Reggie,
I’m not sure what the symptom is… I just got off line with the Garmin National Trainer, and neither he or I can determine what you are fighting.
1. I see you bought an update card (free on the internet).
2. Was the machine running before that?
3. What is it doing now?
4. Do you have an SD card reader in your laptop? (many do)
5. Where you updating the charts or the firmware?
6. Why did the person tell you to ship it back?
Do you have the link to the internet that describes the update procedure>?
http://www8.garmin.com/support/software/marine.html
He’s currently sending me more stuff to ask or provide.

May help?

anyone know about these? ours is having fits. I contacted Garmin and was told I needed to upgrade the software. I bought their update chip, followed directions, but it says I should find an "update software" option to select after the chip is installed, and none shows up.

Perhaps Allison was correct about it not being able to read a card?

You need to get a card reader and make sure there is something on the cards.
