Cleaning engine compartment/lazarette
John Stacklyn2012-03-22 22:35 UTC
Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I were motoring off shore when we noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. It turned out the exhaust pipe between the manifold and the baffle had cracked wide open. We shut her down and tried to tape it closed to no avail. TowBoatsUS was backed up and it was getting late so we decided to continue running it with the bilge pump handling the water outflow but lots of soot blowing around.
So I'm looking for some way to clean the engine and the compartment. Tried hosing it all down and using a garden sprayer to hit it with some diluted Dawn, then rinsing - not much luck. I'm guessing a steam cleaner of some kind and was hoping the group might have some recommendations. Inexpensive is good since I hope to never use it again! Also, what about the electric panel, alternator, A/C, etc?
Thanks in advance,
John Stacklyn

Lets assume its a diesel engine. TSP will do the trick in most cases. Joe D
gave me some advise a long time ago, brake fluid is a good finish cleaner
as it desolves most things. If the engine is in place, I would be very
careful with the brake fluid trick as it affects rubber hoses adversely.
Mask, gloves and eye protection is required when working with TSP available
from Ace or HD. This shit will destroy your eyes if it makes contact.
Follow the direction to get the right dilution factor.
Once cleaned a solution of Original Listerine, water and vinegar will get
rid of any of the remaining diesel odor in the vessel. Will smell like
listerine for a few days but then it disappears.
Best of luck.

john ...Do you have full coverage INS?...go to the yard and pull eng .. OR.clorex has a green cleaner that works real
good take the belts off alt and air cond rap palitic around these take a big fender and lay on floor with a small brush
spary scrub and wipe with clean towels... do not use water... put a piece of screen to keep stuff from falling in bilge
after a couple of times with green cleaner then you can dish soap (dawn or similar now that all grease is gone
you might want to do matance oil change new manafold paint eng and bilge take a 5 gallon bucket and pump the bilge into bucket dump into toilet its propley a week end job..good luck edward

********** NOT brake fluid, BRAKLEEN. It dissolves petroleum, and is an
excellent solvent and cleaner.

******** Brakleen will not effect rubber.
