I have a friend on the CS list who became personal friends with Bob Perry after asking him questions about his boat he sails a Mirage 33, a Perry design. Friends to the point that Bob even invited him out to his house in the Seattle area and I guess at one point, they were talking about my boat, an '80 Cal 39 and Bob said this about it "I've always loved the Cal 39, that design speaks to me." Wonder if he likes all of Lapworth's work? Paul In a message dated 3/19/2012 12:36:29 P.M. <I’m sure we can come up with a number of testimonials, of Cal 40’s with the mast tip well wetted from a knockdown re-righting herself, including my death roll last May> Uhhhh Tim I've been on this list about 3 years . . . did I miss a post about your death roll? I assume this was under spinnaker? Please elaborate . . . we could all use a good sea story and the lessons learned of course. Thanks - Paul

mmmm… okay. We were doing the 2011 Oregon Offshore. A low pressure system was present - pushing us North up the coast – with a squally southerner, carrying 35 knots and hailstorms. Hoisted was the full roach main, up front we flew the Airx 600 180% AP runner kite, a Mylar tallboy spinnaker staysail was sandwiched in between. The boat was very stable with this combo and consistently sailed speeds between 14 to19 knots. My foredeck just came up to drive and once he settled in, we left him upstairs for a photo opportunity… Cal Gal was well ahead of the fleet at this time. You can see this sequence starting around 2:20 minutes in our video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQX_PEZsLjA . At the end of a large surf, the boat wallowed to a round up, which was controlled back to a round down. The boom slowly crossed the cockpit, as the Outgrabber did its job slowing down the action. --- over to the side with no one hurt, masthead truck carving a rut into the waves. As the carbon fiber spinnaker pole hit the water I saw a $5,000 price tag of the pole flash in my head, so I cut the pole topping lift, allowing the pole to swing under the boat and relieve it’s self. We cut loose a spin sheet and hauled the kite in… this took many minutes and a huge amount of “for fook sakes, Jimmy!” shouted by each of us (our boat saying that trip). From then on – recovered - we re-hoisted with our 2.2 oz double taped Kevlar leech 160% “God Kite”…. We put it up, only God can bring it down… it has a candle symbol on its belly seam to taunt the wind to blow it out… this kite combined with the stronger squall helped us set our new boat speed record of ~25 knots (92. knots!?) Moral… If you’re going to play stupid, ya gotta be tough, for fook sakes! *´¨) ¸.· ´¸.·*´¨) ¸.·**¨) (¸.·´ (¸.·' ( ......….-_/) [cid:image005.png@01CBF93B.85770E70] Timm Lessley From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of pw… [at] aol.com Sent: Monday, March 19, 2012 12:53 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] limit positive stability of Cal 40 <I’m sure we can come up with a number of testimonials, of Cal 40’s with the mast tip well wetted from a knockdown re-righting herself, including my death roll last May> Uhhhh Tim I've been on this list about 3 years . . . did I miss a post about your death roll? I haven't sailed since October and now am just starting spring boat work. Didn't Mr. Lapworth give us good boats? Add a capable crew and the result is fun. I was weeping a bit watching the video.
