Wher are Tom & Ray when ya need 'em?
Danny2012-03-26 15:03
My wife and I are having a "dispute" that only Click & Clack, the Tappet Brothers can solve unless you help.
We are on the hard this week getting new bottom paint. While we're out I am removing the packing gland material of unknown age and origin for replacement. I am also pulling out a bright, pink, fuzzy bronze gate valve from under the galley sink. It was installed by Cal with the intent of bringing in sea water to the galley. Since we don't want Puget Sound Water INSIDE the boat and the gate valve is failing; we are pulling it and filling the hole.
That brings me to our "disagreement." Our Standard Horizon Knot meter only works part of the time...usually when we are off the boat. I increasingly refer to our GPS for speed while crusing. (We ony race on other peoples boats.) While filling the aforementioned gate valve hole, I want to pull that knot meter sensor and fill that hole too. My wife says it will hurt eventual re-sale. (Who said anything about selling her?!)

Danny, I hate to tell you, but I agree with your wife on this one. I totally understand the desire to fill all the holes in the bottom of the boat, but you 'may' actually want a real knot meter someday. Just my $.02 worth though.

Danny,
I suggest that you close the hole. It's not likely that you'll find a "modern" knot meter that will fit the Standard Horizon thru-hull if you wanted to.
My $.02

It's easy enough for a new owner to make a new hole that is in the best
location and best size for the new owner's project. Meanwhile, you're
likely to get surveys noting an unused hole or a non-functioning
knotmeter, eithe rof which make it sound like your boat isn't well
maintained. I say "pull the transducer and fill the hole." (Or, get
the electronics fixed so the device works).
My other boat still has an unused hole--the intake for the head, back in
the day when the head sucked water in one side and pumped sewage out the
other, a foot or two away. I removed the big sewage output through-hull
long ago and glassed it over. The intake is still there, its little
bronze screen completely sealed off by accumulated bottom paint. I
spent the weekend working on annual boat maintenance and contemplated
removing the little through-hull and glassing it over, just in case.
The Cal 20 had the same two head through-hulls when I bought it. They
were plugged on the inside, but still.... I removed both, ground some
nice bevels, and got busy with glass and epoxy. Now Cal 20 #1220 has NO
through-hulls. There's one less thing to worry about.

But how happy will the parties be if the boat sinks because of a failed
through-hull? The unspoken "told you so" would be hanging in the air.
Sometimes there are right and wrong answers.

Hi Chris,
That's different! I understood that the thruhull was a knotmeter fitting. Of course any prudent mariner/boat owner would carefully inspect the fitting and transducer for deterioration. There would be no question to replace/reseal than. Allen tells of a 50 year old seacock removed and when cut in half showed no deterioration. A plastic th fitting could be overtightened and cracked at the flange. A plastic thruhull 40 years old did this and a slow leak was filling the bilge on my Cal 20 Rambler. At first I checked the keel bolts. I replaced the fitting with a marlon one and incorporated a seacock that the factory did not install in 1967. Fewer thruhulls fewer problems. Yellow Jack has 2, one for the depth sounder and 1 for the speedo. Brookes & Gatehouse supplies bronze fittings and when I installed them I was unhappy about the added weight 1.5# Now I'm ok with that. At least the weight is near the keel. Next race
is in 11 days SSS Corinthian, I can hardly wait!
Happy Sailing! My Best, Mike Farrell

These are different and might fit . They fit my old knot meter through
hull. I don't, however, recall the brand.

Thanks to all for your comments and ideas.
I was in the yard on the boat for the last two days and we decided to keep the knot meter in. But I did pull that old bronze gate valve meant for galley sea water and then glassed over the hole. One less hole! I found a leaky thru hull for one of the rear cockpit drain scuppers while fooling around under there too. Buffed and waxed the hull and she splashes this Saturday. We are ready to cruise all summer long!
Cheers,
Danny
