Re: [Cal_Boats] Off Shore Risks

The VOR guys may be nuts but they are real sailors and I'll take this event
over the all the AC bullsh*t politics any day and racing in boats that
have to be sailed in "X" wind conditions. It may be good for boat development
but all the surrounding crap that goes with it is nauseating.
I got to be a photoboat and photographer when they had an
Annapolis/Baltimore stopover and I have the utmost respect for anyone willing to do this
race. Here's a few random shots.

I don't know about this race but I am following the Volvo Ocean Race an of
the 6 boats in the race, 4 were broken enough to pull out of this leg for a
bit to get repairs. The race allows you to mark a spot, quit racing, go
get repairs, then go back to that spot and resume racing.
If you are not following imagine being in freezing conditions near
icebergs and doing a repair on your hull by healing the boat way over, putting
someone over the side, and installing 70 bolts and backing plates through the
hull. Heads and backing plates on the outside, more backing plates and
nuts on the inside. Those guys are nuts.

Here's a scary story. I guess it could have been worse.
Thanks for posting that. Public radio news had some brief reports with
few details. It's always good to read about bad conditions so we don't get
too complacent about safety issues.
It was gratifying to read that it was a real rogue wave problem and not
just another bunch of damned fools in conditions that their boat could handle
but they couldn't. That makes everybody look bad.
