By the way, I am in San Francisco and my shipwright still uses the company
in Port Townsend. He likes Purple Heart because it is easier to get nice
pieces compared to white oak. I don't know the details but I do know that
my Purple Heart mast step came out very nice.

Purpleheart may be overkill for engine beds, although it would serve
very well. It's very dense and rot resistant. Our schooner uses it for
sliding-hatch runners. The hatches are very heavy so it's good in that
application--little wear in 22 years' use.

By checking the yellow pages for communities around you, you may find
little independent sawmills, or guys with a wood-miser who mill a little
on the side.
