propellor shaft U-Joint
r good2012-04-23 20:43 UTC
O CAL list, fount of even more wisdom than the porch of knowledge at the Green Cove Springs Marina:
At the transmission end of the driveshaft which runs from the transmission to the V-drive, there is a universal joint. I can feel just a little play in it.
Casting marks on one side has a circle with a capital A inside it followed by 15, and below that is RZ1
bearing end caps says SPICER USA.
the local NAPA guy pulled out his vernier calipers and decided it was a Precision 413 which fit an Alfa Romeo, and he did not have one.
I'm drawing blanks with my web searches.
Help finding a replacement please?

my concern is that i do not know if the Precisioo 413 is a direct interchange for the u-joint I have. It ws the best guess of the parts guy at Napa, just from his measurements, without disassembling the u-joint to confirm the rough measurements.

Assuming it is just a U-joint I think all you care about is that the holes
are the same size and spacing and that the length of the thing is close to
the same. I am reasonably sure that a U-joint for any car will be more
than strong enough.
Back when it was difficult to get parts for my Austin Healey, I used to
take the old part into an auto parts story and ask if they had one. They
would ask me what car it was from and I would tell them that if I told them
they would say they didn't have it so I wan't going to tell them. They
would then just match it up. Austin Healey cam followers? 34 Buick
hydraulic outer bodies. If it fits, it is perfect.

thanks. Tom.
I felt confident that the U-joint would have lasted, but I would have thought about it every time I was motoring in a tight spot. and, it would have been a bear to change if it died later.
The NAPA guy was correct. Autozone lady cross referenced the Precision 413 to a MOOG 413 and had one heare b y 1PM. $9.36 plus tax. already installed.

Yes, we are interested in sharing their cruising dream.
I have a similar U-joint on Satori. Yes, it has a little play, maybe .030" lateral. That is after 45 years, for sure 30 years as we have never changed it.
Define "a little play".
As long as a new one fits, that is good enough IMHO. They get very little wear as our engines only torque slightly and it is constant. U joints in power boat outdrives wear, but they take power when the helm is hard over, both directions and they last 1,000s of hours. Send me the dimensions and I can get you one.
Hope this helps.
Best to You and Miss Barb
