The coast guard suspended racing in 1978 when a huge set of rollers
lasted a couple weeks. We did a MORA Drakes Bay race when they opened
the ocean after the storm blew through. The boats would completly
dissapear in the troughs and you could see most of the hulls when they
hobby-horsed on top of the crests. It was still blowing 30+ and was
quite a ride when it became dark. Less than 1/2 of the fleet made it to
anchor overnight past hurricane gulch for the morning start. Those on
deck were clipped in, and those below were responsible for keeping
navigational position until relieved off watch for sleep. At times I
wonder what it was like out there like a forbidden siren calling us out
even though we could not go.
