Cal 22

Hello Cal group, I am in the process of inspecting a 1986 Cal 22 which I'm interested in purchasing. It is a fresh water boat and appears to be in very good condition, well maintained. I am curious though what if any types of problems I may encounter buying an 86 Cal if I need a replacement parts for it down the road? Or is it such that most of the parts can be replaced with non original equipment? Looks like a great boat but just thinking ahead when and if I need to replace something. any input greatly appreciated... thanks, Don

Hello, and welcome, Don. Replacement parts are a matter of finding something that does the trick. Good CAL List here. Someone among our readership (participantship?) will have done what you need to do and can give a hand with sources of parts and ways to do things. Where are you located? Off to race the NOODs in a little while. On boats, very few parts are unique or boat-specific. Hardware was from outside vendors, and in the case of our Cals, it varied from time to time as Jensen Marine found good prices here or there. For nonstandard things (some portlights, maybe), you can always find a way to make up a replacement item. I think that's part of the fun. Chris Campbell > >

Greetings, I am a longtime lurker, impressed with the depth and breadth of this group. On the off chance that someone on the east coast is interested, my 1972 Cal 21, hull #508, is in need of a new home. For those who don't know, this is the swing keel daysailer (ok it has a small cabin, but I would not want to spend any time there). It floats off the bunk trailer in a few inches of water and the keel is dropped by a winch, then bolted in place. Sails very nicely, balances well, and is lively. Anyway, the keel is showing rust and is in need of repair (it's made of steel and lead) and I don't have the time or energy to do it. The keel weighs ~350lbs and will need to be removed from the boat and at least rebuilt or perhaps replaced. The rest of the boat is in fine shape and I would hate to see it go to a landfill. I have a nearly new set of North sails; the jib is set up for a Schaefer furler which comes with the boat. Trailer is hardly used, galvanized single axle and no rust. Another less desirable option is to part it out. Much of the rigging is similar to or identical to the Cal 20, maybe sails too? This would make a nice cheap project for someone who wants to get into Cal boats. If there's any interest I am very flexible on price and would work with a new owner.
