Wow Allen that's a lotta work! You wood boat guys have a lot of faith in your wood swelling up and sealing leaks. I'd be a nervous wreck! Wonder how much weight that adds to the boat and how the designers and builders account for the swelling. It seems it would be more of an art than a science. Can't wait to get some time to watch your spinnaker videos. Good luck tomorrow! Faith, and sleeping on the boat with one foot draped over so it touches the cabin sole... Actually, I did sleep on the boat but I could see that the leak was getting smaller and by the middle of the night I could hear from the sound the pump makes that the leak was a lot less so I was not worried. I was actually surprised that it stopped so quickly. Papoose is strip planked so it should not leak at all. But when it dries out, the seams split as the glue fails. It seemed to happen more around the bulkheads where the boat could not just get smaller. Allen On Tue, May 8, 2012 at 6:58 PM, Paul <pw… [at] aol.com> wrote: > ** > > > Wow Allen that's a lotta work! Allen, do the waterline and overall wetted surface get larger? Something must contain the swelling to cause compression. Is it called a sny or some kind of keel thingy? Well, that was my theory watching the cracks form in the hull. The bulkheads are hull shaped cross sections of plywood and the hull cannot shrink against the plywood. In other places, the hull is free to just make a smaller boat. We are talking about a fraction of an inch across the hull but it definitely split more at the bulkheads although not exclusively. Obviously factors like the sun and the wind also played a role. The bow on Papoose cannot split because it is covered with Fiberglass, and early attempt to stop a leak solved by replacing 5 floors and the mast step about 6 years ago.
