speaking of Betas; length of shaft between prop and cutlass bearing

When we mounted my Beta Marine last year we had to push the prop shaft out some. I remember Joe saying that the distance must be no more than the diameter of the shaft between the cutlass bearing and the prop. Unfortunately I have a 1 inch shaft and about 1 3/4 of shaft before the prop that I didn't notice until the engine was muscled in and attached. I get a rumble at 2200-2400 RPMs and cannot tell if it is a muffler rattle or something else. After putting about 45 hours on the engine last year (trips to Canada with little wind) I have no play (wear) in my cutlass bearing, but I also back off the throttle when I get that rumble. Could that extra shaft length be the noise, and ultimately a big problem? Thanks for you expertise as always. Bob Connell "Jollygood!", Cal 31, #59 Shilshole Bay, WA

Also ensure the engine is not contacting the hull or engine bed, except by the 4 flexible engine mounts. Use a wood ruler [ or similar shaped wood piece ] and pass it between the engine and hull. There should be no binding or contact. > After putting about 45 hours on the engine last year (trips to Canada > with little wind) I have no play (wear) in my cutlass bearing, but I > also back off the throttle when I get that rumble.
