Master Mariners L-36 class result

Allen Edwards2012-05-27 22:41 UTC
The L-36 class turned out to be a match race between Papoose and Eventide. Leda, the boat I usually am concerned about beating has serious deck problems and can't race until the deck is replaced, which will happen soon. Eventide is the L-36 that was T-boned last year and underwent extensive repairs, new boom and mast, and half the starboard hull replaced. It was great to see them out on the race course. The race starts at the St Francis Yacht Club crosses the bay a few times and finishes at the Bay Bridge for a 15.6 nautical mile course. We started at 12:45 and finished at 3:32, 2 hours 45 minutes. We followed our strategy fairly closely realizing that if we were on a beat on the first leg, that we could make the second leg without tacking and thus should head directly to the mark. Being well ahead at that point, we kept the 90 jib up downwind as there was some risk in raising our unhanked reaching 150 (no spinnaker class). The wind went from near zero at a couple of the marks, to what must have been close to 30 at others. It was difficult to have the "right" sail up. Anyway, we won by 30 minutes. That is 120 seconds per mile. Not bad for a one design race. Allen

Great job Allen! So was it all a tactical win or did you have a boat speed advantage as well? Thanks, In talking to the other skipper it seems to have been both boat speed and tactics :-) Allen On Sun, May 27, 2012 at 9:11 PM, <pw… [at] aol.com> wrote: > ** > > > Great job Allen!
