Cal 40's In Newport to Bermuda Race
It's a drag race between 2 Cal 40's in Class 1 of the Bermuda race. Very
favorable winds have made for a screaming reach all the way there so far
for most of the boats. Rambler ( a 90 footer) was able to shave off 14 hours
of the record time set by Disney's Pyewacket 10 years ago averaging around
16kts.
My buddies on the Cal 40 Belle Aurore have a 5 mile lead and a half knot
better boat speed than Sinn Fein in 2nd place at the last update. Nicole,
another Cal 40 from our area was in 5th I believe and a sistership to my
boat, Hakuna Matada, a Cal 39 was next to last (apparently they are that great
of sailors or don't have the boat prepped as I believe they are rated
faster than the Cal 40's). These positions are all on the water and not
corrected. I say that because there is a New York 32 that has gained a lot of
ground and looks to be in a position to crack off and pass a lot of boats on
the water if the wind directions hold and are correct. Even if they don't
pass them on the water I'm guessing they will correct very high if the trend
continues.
They should be finishing up late tonight/early tomorrow if the winds hold.
