Anyone know the differences between the IRC and ORR measurements? They
have posted results for both ratings for some reason and the difference is
amazing. The ORR appears to be closer to the finish on the water and the IRC
scrambles them all up and reverses 1st and 2nd places and a Bermuda 40
goes from 3rd to 7th! WTH is up with that?
What rating system is used for trophy presentation I wonder?
It was a screaming reach most all the way if you look at the tracks. Only
once in the Class 1 division did there appear to be a need to gybe and not
even for all the boats.

Hi, Mike. Looked like a lot of reaching content. Anything like the
TransPac?

The Transpac, when I went, was a close reach for the first five days. That
is when you get into the trade winds and the breeze keeps clocking to the
east so the reach becomes a run. The boats keep heading up to the north to
keep the wind on the quarter. Finally, as you near Hawaii, you jibe to port
and head down to the finish. In years when the high is to the south or
weak, you head farther south to get south of it where winds are better. The
calculation is distance vs speed.
THis what it looks like:

The year I went, we had a strong high that stayed north and made for a very
fast race. It was a bit like this Bermuda run.

Our finish was very similar to this one but it was at dawn and in rain
squalls. I need to post it on You Tube.
