Chris, you are in freshwater, so steel should not be as much problem as for salties like me. Bronze would be great and was used to make centerboards for many K/CB designs in the 1950s and 60's, possible well into the 1970's. However, Bronze will be heavier. I believe (not a real problem) but will also be big $$s, the price of a Bronze CB may come close to the total value of the boat, maybe even more. I agree with those that say the original lasted 51 years, why change (that is, it is better to make a new CB from steel, not Bronze)? One other possibility, is using a sheet of fiberglass, like some have used as backing plates, I think the commercial material is called "G-10". Still may be pricey, but won't rust! With today's specialized coatings, steel will last a very long time. Steel will also be MUCH MUCH less $ than bronze. Problem with coated steel is that it operates in a tough environment. The board runs in a trunk of iron (the ballast keel), which rusts (less than steel, luckily) and is not smooth. Also we've got the invasive mussels, zebra and quagga, with very sharp shells. And of course, I have been known to find the bottom with my centerboard--bump, bang, oh shit!!! My notion is to replace it with bronze. So my question for you metallurgists is what alloy to choose, and for you folks with specialized knowledge, where to buy bronze plate. As to the alloy, a centerboard needs to be stiff but not brittle, and durable in a slightly corrosive environment. The 'board will be housed in a cast iron ballast keel and lifted with a stainless steel pendant/pennant (never have quite figured those terms out). A plus, in a shoal-draft boat with iron instead of lead keel. > I believe (not a real problem) but will also be big $$s, the price of > a Bronze CB may come close to the total value of the boat, maybe even > more. Hard to say without a price quote, but also, if we measured sailing by economic criteria, none of us would own boats....
