Most PHRF ratings are based on the conditions your boat came from the
factory with, I.E. if it came with a Groco head then to "conform" your boat has
to have a Groco head. The ratings as we all know are based on a set of
specifications and weight as built from the factory is one of them.
Here locally, the radio talk show host DR. Laura Schellenger had her PHRF
ticket suspended when it was found out she had removed the head on her boat
to save weight. Being a high profile person (with the ego that comes with
it) she was highly embarrassed, firing her race director (passing the blame
of course) and rarely showing her face at the yacht club these days. A
competitor can make trouble for someone who has a "Non-Conforming" boat. There
are those who know they are cheating when they alter their boat and those
who are just ignorant of that fact. I certainly mean no disrespect to anyone
on this list in that statement. It is frustrating when you keep your boat
in conforming conditions knowing some of your competitors are not,
especially when they are beating you out on the course.

FYI while its great that the Groco head can apparently go 10 yrs w/o a rebuild, when you do finally rebuild it be prepared to spend the better part of 2 days cleaning caked on sh*t out of it. I just spent a little over an hour with Comet and a scouring pad cleaning the the bottom of the bowl where, because the rubber backflow valve wasn't closing properly, water would sit constantly and grow whatever it could on the edges. Everything on the interior was caked however and required a wire brush and scouring pads to clean. Amazingly however, all the bolts that needed to come off did so easily thankfully.
I ground off all the old paint and am re-painting so hopefully it looks as good as it works.
Now to re-assemble . . ..

Husar, Charlie [USA] (ASE)2012-07-16 06:16 UTC
It seems that a lot of this discussion is ignoring the word “performance” in PHRF. A very good skipper in a region can destroy the rating for a given type of boat just because that person is a very good sailor and out sails the local rating. Everybody with that boat type might get rerated., Thank goodness I race one design.
Cheers, Anyway
