Port Starboard Rule Change

Apparently the rule has changed a bit. No longer can a port boat yell to the stbd boat to "hold your course". The port boat must allow enough room for the stbd boat to adjust to any windshifts whether they get lifted or headed. I didn't realize this. Was anyone else aware of this change? Paul

What rule are you quoting? All I see on changing course is rule 16 *16 CHANGING COURSE* *16.1 *When a right-of-way boat changes course, she shall give the other boat *room *to *keep clear*. *16.2 *In addition, when after the starting signal a *port-tack *boat is * keeping* *clear** *by sailing to pass astern of a *starboard-tack *boat, the * starboard-* *tack** *boat shall not change course if as a result the *port-tack* boat would immediately need to change course to continue *keeping* *clear*. Interesting discussion and complicated, my understanding of the current rules and official interpretations are: 1. Holding your course means continuing to sail your proper course without tacking or gybing, it does not restrict the starboard boat from taking any lifts regardless of the effect on the burdened boat. Logically you will be taking any knocks so why not take the lifts. 2. Collisions between boats should result in a protest being properly filed. If no protests are filed by either party involved a third party, including the race committee, may file a protest and if significant damage had occurred both boats will be disqualified. 3. All boats are required to keep a proper lookout. If a starboard boat does not see a port boat they are at least partially liable. 4. Regardless of the racing rules, if you collide with another boat and render it disabled you have a legal and moral requirement to render assistance. File a protest and ask for redress if you think you are right. 5. If you hit a mark you are not obligated to reround the mark; if the hitting was incidental and did not give you a significant advantage you need to do a 360 degree turn on the next leg (during the 360 you have no rights); if hitting the mark gave you a significant advantage you must retire immediately and are scored as DSQ. 6. Penalty turns must be taken on the leg where the violation occurred, I think this means that if they occur during the pre-start they must be taken after the starting signal but before crossing the start line. But I may be wrong. Hi, All. This was a rule change in 16.2. For a while "hunting" was permitted. (I think this is what Paul is referring to). A starboard boat could do anything they damn well pleased while on starboard and the port boat had to stay out of their way. This piece of idiocy did not last long. We are now back to the "old days", I believe.
