Ted, I don't know about the Cal 34, but there is a mesh filter in the top of the fuel pickup on Cal 35 MkII's. Mine clogged resulting in engine shutdown. There is enough room above the aluminum tank to remove the shutoff valve, unscrew the pickup tube, lift it up and secure it with vice grips. The elbow then screws off and the filter is pulled from the upper end of the tube. I had to drop the tank to completely remove the pickup tube. Good luck, Tim Odom 1984 Cal 35 MKII Whisper the Wind

Thanks for the input. Guess I will start soaking the fitting and try to get it out. Its only been on there 40 plus years! Ted On my 1975 2-34, it didn't have a screen om the pick up? I missed the first part of your problem. Is your vent line clear? I have seen fuel lines swell shut?
