Hello group!
JamesD2012-07-30 14:50
I just purchased 1978 Cal 2-27 "September Too", in Half Moon Bay, California. I just moved her to Marina Bay Yacht Harbor, Richmond, California, where she will be berthed for the foreseeable future.
The boat was re powered with a Universal M20-3B (overkill?)diesel but I don't think the prop was changed to match; ~3.5-4K at cruising (3K) RPMs Anyone else have the same or similar engine? I think the Beta Marine is the same block (3cylinder 20 hp tractor engine) with a slightly different "marine" layout and is a common replacement for the Atomic 4. The gear reduction is 2.05:1.
Anyhow, just wanted to say hello to the group and pick the collective brain on prop sizes with the 20hp diesel. I have inquiries out to a few different prop sources but have not heard back yet.

Greets...and welcome, the 27 is a nice boat.. Ping Joe Demers the
resident mechanic who may be on holidays or delivery trip at this time
of year. He will set you straight on the engine and prop requirements.
Best of luck....happy sailing...keep the nose up...:)

Here's what we need to get a prop recommendation -
maximum engine hp at what? rpm
transmission reduction ratio [ 2.05:1 in your case ]
load waterline length of the boat
maximum diameter prop that fits your boat

Right thanks. I am having a diver measure the clearance sometime this week. Max RPM is 3600 20hp. LWL 22' 1" I read that the max prop diameter is 12", but I've also read that there were different setups. So when the driver pulls the prop, he'll check the clearance. It had an A4....

Your engine is a Universal M20 3B, 20hp @ 3600 rpm. [ way too much
power for your Cal, 14 hp is ideal ]
trans ratio is 2.05:1
LWL is 22' 1" [ double check this figure ]
12 x 11, 3 blade [ we suggest a 2 blade for your sweet sailing Cal ]
12 x 13, 2 blade [ very oddball size ]
14 x 11 , 2 blade [ ideal ]

Hey Joe, I understand diameter & number of blades are factors as well. I am asking rather than stating as you (and others on this list) know more than I about this.
I read that a prop blade (radius) should ideally be 85% of the distance of the center of the prop to the hull. A simple example would be: A boat with 10 inches from prop center to hull would ideally have a 8.5inch blade or radius which in turn be a 17inch diameter. Is that only for cetain types of props?
I also read that aside from less drag when sailing, 2 blades are more efficient than 3. Might have been a sales pitch, but I don't know enough about the subject & still doing some reading.
I am doing homework on this stuff right now because in addition to my rudder damage I posted about recently, I have prop & strut damage as well. Honu is high ans dry at SF Boatworks where we found more damage than I originally thought.
Bummed out -

A comment if I may. If you are racing a 2 blade is an issue. If not a three
blade is the way to go. Less work on the engine, easier to backup. Drag
loss is incremental, whats a knot on a weekend or longer passage? in
exchange of using less fuel consumption and much more comfort working a
slip in a high wind. I'd take a three blade over a 2 blade anytime.....but
then again I dont race and dont suspect I will other then crew on other
peoples boats. Now that could be fun and a good experience.
Best regards

I would respectfully offer an alternate opinion. A two bladed (geared is better) folding prop of modern design does not suffer in reverse or forward and a 1/2 to 1 full knot of boat speed on a sailboat Is something to cling to whether you race or are just running from a storm or want to beat your friends to the best anchor drop zone.
I must concede that, unfortunately, the real disadvantage is the initial cost....

If anyone wants an old 2 blade 14-7 contact me off list. I don't know what
it is worth so make an offer after you see some photos and more details. I
just replaced mine with a 14-10.

I have no idea why the PO installed that engine. It's there, it is lighter than than the A4 and it works. So installed it shall be until it blows up. I have a diver coming this week to measure clearances and pull the prop. Thanks for the imput.

I use a 2-blade 13" Maxprop on my Cal 2-27, set at 18 degrees, powered by a BetaMarine BZ482 (13.5 hp).

A proper 2 blade will drive your boat well. It can be tucked behind the keel. A 3 blade will always be a drag! Are you a sailor or a motorboatman?

A comment if I may. If you are racing a 2 blade is an issue. If not a three blade is the way to go. Less work on the engine, easier to backup. Drag loss is incremental, whats a knot on a weekend or longer passage? in exchange of using less fuel consumption and much more comfort working a slip in a high wind. I'd take a three blade over a 2 blade anytime.....but then again I dont race and dont suspect I will other then crew on other peoples boats. Now that could be fun and a good experience.

Chris,
I checked out the Kiwi after seeing one on a large blue water boat in Ventura Harbor Boat Yard for repairs (not prop repairs.) The guy loved it.
Unfortunately, they don't make a model (at least not a year and a half ago) that will fit on the 2-29, and so I think that rules out other Cals of similar or smaller size.

Wilkie,
The answer I got about the Kiwi was that it wouldn't work with the direct drive Atomic 4.

Finally had the prop pulled today. It looks like 12" is the biggest I can go unless I get a longer prop shaft and wiggle a thirteen in there. The prop pulled is a 1" shaft 12X6 bronze 2 blade (Michigan Wheel Sailor). Anyone interested?
I'm thinking a folding/feathering prop is in order....It's just money right?

RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Hello group! and prop recommendation
John Boyce2012-08-15 13:24 UTC
Did you get a measurement from the end of the shaft to the rudder? A
folding prop has a long base that the blades attach to effectively extending
the shaft several inches (a fixed prop is installed before the end of the
shaft, a folding prop is installed after the end of the shaft . if that
makes sense) on my 227 I could only get a 10" folding prop on after I
modified the cutlass, shaft, and rudder. That being said I know that some
of the older 227's that were equipped with a4's installed folding props with
no problems. Before I modified everything I had a 14" fixed prop.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Hello group! and prop recommendation (Jim)

Jim,
We have a 2-Blade 13" MaxProp on our 1979 CAL 2-27, but I know there are lots of choices available on the market.
If you are strictly a racer, I would definitely go for a folding prop, but be prepared to rubber-band the blades prior to each race.
In our case, we cruise/race. The MaxProp easily drives the boat to hull-speed, and we have good maneuverability in reverse. While racing, we merely put the transmission in reverse to prevent the shaft from turning, and the blades feather for minimal drag. MaxProps are a bit pricey, but we were fortunate to get it with Magic when we bought her.
Good Luck!

I have 9" clearance from the end of the shaft to the rudder. The boat was made in '78. Disco lives!

A folding prop has a long base that the blades attach to effectively extending the shaft several inches (a fixed prop is installed before the end of the shaft, a folding prop is installed after the end of the shaft … if that makes sense) on my 227 I could only get a 10” folding prop on after I modified the cutlass, shaft, and rudder. That being said I know that some of the older 227’s that were equipped with a4’s installed folding props with no problems. Before I modified everything I had a 14” fixed prop.

read that aside from less drag when sailing, 2 blades are more efficient than 3. Might have been a sales pitch, but I don't know enough about the subject & still doing some reading.
