Start Line Android App Best Test version

Allen Edwards2012-08-24 02:31 UTC
Hi Cal boat owners. My long rumored Android tablet / phone racing app is ready for beta testing. I am offering it to members of this list first. I call it StartLine because it began as a way to get to the starting line at the right time. I have added waypoints and use it instead of a GPS when I race. There are problems with using a tablet of phone and I talk about them on my web site here <http://l-36.com/phone_or_tablets.php>. I mount my tablet below to get away from reflections and control it with a $7 remote. Check out what it does on this web page http://l-36.com/startline.php Let me know if you are interested let me know. You need to race, have an Android phone or tablet, and be willing to give feedback and receive updates. Race Start page. Time to start is a count down timer to the start. The interesting thing is that you set the start time and don't have to sync to a gun if your RC uses GPS time. If they don't, you can sync. Time to line is the time it would take to get to the line once you go for it. Time to burn is the difference. Time to starboard pin (9 choices) is the time to the layline if you went to it parallel to the line. It is intended to help you get set up. [image: Inline image 1] Waypoint page. Turn tells direction of mark. 90 degrees would indicate the layline. Time to waypoint is useful for deciding when to take the spin down. [image: Inline image 2] If you have questions about what it is please ask. Allen

Allen - I'd like to give it a shot but you'll have to wait a couple of weeks for feedback as 1) my phone locked up on me last night and 2) we are RC next week. Wish I had your talent(s) for creating this stuff! Looks interesting. Does it use the tablet internal gps? I now have two tablets that I use as readers and casual Internet operations but neither has a gps. Been trying to figure out how to get either a USB or bluetooth gps to connect but so far no go. Thanks, Al On Aug 24, 2012, at 11:42 AM, Allen Edwards <al… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > Let me know when you have finished reading the instructions and let me answer any questions. It will use either the internal GPS or an external one. I use an external one because the errors are less and it is significant for a race start. I see about 15 feet with the WAAS units and about 30 feet with the internal GPS. I use a Qstarz unit that does logging as well as the program has limited logging at this time. I use an app called "Bluetooth GPS Provider" to interface between the Qstarz and the tablet. America's cup was:Re: [Cal_Boats] Start Line Android App Best Test version (Allen)

Speaking of starts, I was watching yesterdays Americas Cup San Francisco world series on youtube. Absolutely amazing how the crews were able to line up and hit the starting line with such precision in the fleet racing. Youtube had broadcast it live earlier in the day, and of course, it was or is available for view later, or now. What would be cool would be to develop the ability to hit the starting line doing a mental count down using just the flag warnings. Of course, I use a wrist watch.... with a dial. The dial is way so much more easier to use because it give me a graphic representation of time vs. a digital presentation which is harder for my mind to grasp, and I don't have to switch from time mode to count down mode; everything is all there on the dial, which is also larger and much easier to read than tiny dark numbers on a gray background. Oh yes, wouldn't using a computer to time you be sorta like cheating to some extent, as you have an aide that no one else has? I don't own an ipad or an iphone, but maybe I could pick up a used one cheap on Craigslist. Arrrghhh. Not another gadget I got to have me feeble brain learn to use!!
