Weight Conscious Racers

I'm sure you've heard the stories (or maybe not) of skippers who make their crews cut off the handles on their tooth brushes to save weight. If that is you, you need one of these. Scaled-Down: New Nano Device Can Weigh Single Molecules A tiny resonating beam, just 10 millionths of a meter in length, can measure the mass of a molecule or nanoparticle in real time. The crew will never get away with anything again. If you need the full article, I can provide. Cheers Charlie

Then the problem becomes how to only cut 10 nano particles off your toothbrush if its overweight ;-). Charlie, as a class of atheletes most large sailboat sailors are woefully out of shape, even borderline pathologically obese, as is current trend for the average sedentary American. Therefore the idea of cutting the toothbrush in half to save weight is absurd. I could see if these sailboats were like human powered flying machines, or even sailplanes, but they ain't even close. On the other hand, you don't see too many sailors built like long distance runners or anorexic models, because of the desire for the stability imparted by fleshy weight shift ballast systems. Ideally we should eat cake up wind on the windward side, and barf our brains out, etc, going down wind. Great thought, Jerry. I think those dish shaped keels today are suitable for offensive linemen to hike out… but when the wind dies…. Bermuda fitted dinghies (odd machines) permit the skipper to dump crew overboard at marks.
