last sail

Last night was probably my last sail of the season on the nice Cal 20, /Martha C./ It's supposed to rain today and tomorrow and I'll be gone this weekend. Haul-out is next week, depending on what days the weather lets me get the mast down and the boat hauled. So I took a couple photos to memorialize the occasion. First is /Martha C/ herself, as dusk falls, and next is the faithful dinghy, doing its best Boston Whaler imitation (I liked the old-style Whaler combo of turquoise and varnished mahogany). She's in a marina and is protected, and she gets sailed on weekends in the daytime. Ol' Cal 20 #1220 gets sailed after work during the week mostly, and the daylight hours are dwindling. The real concern is the fall storms. If she were moored in a well protected location, I'd leave her in until freeze-up! I've mostly accepted the fact that the seasons are going to change whether I approve or not, and whether I'm happy about it or not, so I get a bit less melancholy than I used to. But shortly I'll start getting all those ads for Christmas cards showing sailboats moored in a snowy cove with a wreath and lighted cabin, suggesting somebody enjoying a meal below with friends after a nice sail around the harbor. No, it's not real life, but it does make me wish I'd left the boat in! Chris Campbell >
