As far as I know......... timeline is approximate, willing to be corrected! 1) 27 (AKA Pop-Top) 2) T/2 (think the 27 and T/2 may have overlapped? both in production for a while?) 3) 2-27 (later called "CAL 27" 4) 3-27 (AKA CAL 27-III) All were C.William Lapworth designs. Timeline: 1971-7? CAL 27, 1972-? "Bill Lapworth designed the Cal 2-27 in 1973 for Jensen Marine (also known as Cal-Boats) in Costa Mesa, California., which produced the boat from 1974 to 1980. The 2-27 followed the original Cal 27, a boat with a pop-top cabin-house and less than stellar performance. The successor offered 4 inches more beam and 5 inches less DWL but 1,300 pounds more displacement. Cal Boats already had success with the Cal 29, but looked for a similar design that was smaller and more in tune with the struggling economy. Later, Lapworth designed the Cal 3-27, which was launched in 1983 and underwent a rather confusing name change back to Cal 27 before it was taken off the assembly line in 1985." --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Rodney G. We have a 1977 Cal 2-27 w/ atomic 4 in it (gasoline). I have owners manual and a few other original documents. I fell in love with her 1st visit regardless of being highly neglected. Doesn't the original Cal 27 have a lower PHRF than the second version? With less weight, a longer waterline .length it should be faster, alto it has a certain lack of head room below without popping the top. I guess that's the reason for the T-2 and the 2-27, more liveable designs for those spending more time below deck. I kinda like the older boat's looks, and it's hull shape. But the second version does have a more classic look, and side decks, which is nice. Mike Harris and I sailed his 27 pop-top from the Isthmus at Catalina back to Marina Del Rey. Probably 10 to 12 knots breeze and she sailed like a witch. I was very impressed. The 2-27 is a nicer boat all around, with headroom and accommodations, but I can't imagine it out-sailing the original 27.
