masts, booms, aluminum

What is done to seal/anodize a raw aluminum so that it does not need painting? Aluminum sometimes gets a black oxide coat, but our masts and booms don't do that.
When a painted mast is stripped, how can the aluminum be sealed so it doesnt produce the ongoing black?

Reggie,
When we rebuilt Magic's rig, we stripped it of all fittings, sanded it to bare aluminum, then used alumiprep & alodine to prep it. It was followed by a coat of zinc chromate, then three coats of primer, and finally two coats of Awlgrip topcoat. Beaware, Awlgrip products don't come cheap.
I don't know what is done to seal it so that it doesn't need painting.

Yeah, I did a similar process... stripped most of the paint off, then sanded the entire thing down to bare aluminum, applied alumiprep and alodine, then a 2 part epoxy primer, then interlux bright sides (2 coats). My big "uh oh" is not rolling and tipping the primer. I figured I'd roll and tip the top coats but I didn't realize you'd need to do the same to the primer to avoid orange peel. Looks good now, but not that glassy roll/tip look.
