When you go to register a boat in most States they will ask for the HIN. If the boat is Home-made or too old to have a 12-digit USCG required HIN, most States will assign a "State-Issued" HIN after inspecting the boat to be sure she was not stolen. The 12-digit state-issued HIN, which the owner is then supposed to engrave or otherwise permanently mark in the usual spot [on outside of transom approximately <2" below the gunwale (or rubrail) near the Starboard side, or on the starboard side within 12" of the stern(also approximately <2" below gunwale)] The HIN should also be marked in a hidden spot below deck (I marked our CAL 21 under the platform for the head) as a further form of ID. These "State-Issued HINs will all begin with the 2-letter abbreviation used for the State's registration numbers, followed by a "Z" then the rest of the HIN. They do not usually reflect the original model year of the boat (some states do) but usually will reflect the year that the HIN was issued. The State-Issued HIN will be more official and "safer" to use than a owner-created HIN. Not that all State agencies would know enough to spot a carefully made up HIN, but why take a chance? There is a trick to making up HINs to satisfy the modern bureaucracies that require them, but I have forgotten the format. We could also make up a modern one (circa 1972) if we know the hull number inside the stern. Are there numbers on your sails? They were often the hull number. Sounds like you would be in the 600s depending on where you live (can tell where the boat was built sometimes based on the hull number. I could probably perform the inspection by placing my hands on the computer screen, since I have seen many CAL 25s inside, out, and even upside down. Even cut up a couple. Is the boat largely original? I. N. number HIN numbers were not required on boats manufactured before Nov. 1, 1972, and your boat is unlikely to have an actual HIN number. However, the production number of your model may be on a piece of paper glassed to the inside of the upper starboard transom.
