You have to remove the boards that the backrests are mounted on. If I recall correctly, the backrests are screwed into the shelves along the port side. The forward one is screwed to the bulkhead. The screws are countersunk and plugged, and the bronze screw heads strip easily so be careful as you back them out or else you end up drilling them out. It's not easy, and difficult to do without damaging the shelves or bulkhead a bit, as I remember. We thought about coming up with a mounting system that would be easier to mount and remove, but ended up just screwing them back in as had been done originally. My backrests were screwed in a fixed position which was not only uncomfortable lean against, but did not allow for storage access. I removed the screws and put hinges, bungies and a stop at a comfortable rest angle. Thus enabling the back to be swung out of the way for easy access. Now I can stow away blankets, flare kit and other stuff.
