Cal 39, another boat review on the horizon
Dear friends and fellow sailors,
With our January issue coming together nicely already (thanks to all the dedicated worker bees around here), it's time to gather sailors' comments about the boats scheduled for review in our March issue. We think you'll like reading what other sailors and owners of specific boats have to say as much as what our reviewers have to say. On this round we're looking for input on the Cal 39. There's just one boat scheduled for review in the March issue, although we'll have a feature boat article on a Catalina 27 and a refit article on a 28-foot trailerable. Stay tuned for those as well.
Back to the review boat: Do you own a Cal 39? Have you had one in the past? Do you know someone who owns or has owned one?
If yes, we'd like to hear from you. Please send your comments to the guy who manages our boat reviews, Dan Spurr:
da… [at] aol.com<mailto:%2… [at] aol.com>
Tell Dan about the sailing characteristics (good and bad), the level of quality in the build, quirky things to watch out for, the good things that are true selling points for this boat, and anything else that springs to mind.
If this isn't a boat you've sailed on in the past, please stay tuned for future messages of this kind. We'll be sending a notice like this every two months. We're bound to come upon a boat that is or has been in your collection over the years.
If you have had experience with the Cal 39, we're anxious to hear from you. Thanks for sharing your experience with "the rest of us"!

Charlie, did your fleet o' Cals survive the storm OK? Left Coast Cal owners wanna know.
Everybody with a Cal on the Right Coast ok? And their boats? I've seen pictures of boats strewn about like cord wood, or a log jam on a Northwest river. The devastation is reminiscent of the Japanese Tsunami. It'll be as dangerous to cross the Atlantic as it is the Pacific, what with all the debris floating around. The value of concrete and steel pleasure cruising boats will probably increase. Did Lapworth ever dabble in those popular ferro cement boats that were common place in the early seventies? I remember when I moved to LA, there was one being built in every vacant lot in Marina del Rey.
Oh well, probably not.
Jerry

I dont think so but a rather good east coast designer did. See
http://www.benford.us/ with the most popular or best known design being the
Badger. He has several cement designs in fact. Nice guy too...:)
Was wondering the same thing, as have heard no reports from the Chesapeake.
Friends along the Delaware side Jersey Coast line were left unscathed
completely. Boat went up then went down...thats about it. The Atlantic side
took a beating.

I won't say I was left unscathed but I did get off lightly.
'Destiny' was lifted off her stands by the surge and bumped/jostled by
all the other boats in the same surge, she came to rest against a large
sport fisher so she's at least upright but is heavily scratched and one
bump on the stern quarter - nothing a bit of epoxy and a paint job won't
fix.
Given that where she was standing in the yard was at least 25' above and
150' from the water line it must have been an 'impressive' surge and we
got off pretty lightly all things considered, not everyone else in the
yard faired so well, a lot of destroyed vessels - very sad.

When I went down to my boat on Broad Creek on the north shore of the Magothy
River north of Annapolis two days after the storm, the boat was fine. There
was debris on the dock indicating that it had been submerged, which would
require a level at least 2 feet above a normal high tide. No problem for me
since my slip is very wide and I can tie the boat up loosely.
