Helen .... I'm not sure if this answers your question, but it might help. http://www.boatrudder.com/<http://www.boatrudder.com/> Foss foam built most of the new Cal-40 rudders. Doug Grant, here in SoCal, can also build them from the Schumacher design, and possibly build them better. If I were looking for a new "Schumacher" rudder, I'd certainly call Doug. The "Ultra" rudders may be built by a company called Water Rats, in Santa Cruz. I believe that they built the rudder for Stan and Sally Honey's "Illusion". Longer, thinner, very high-performance, very expensive. I do not think that the Cal-40 class would accept that rudder for class racing. http://www.daysailer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1983<http://www.daysailer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1983> Fin Beven Cal-40 #24 Radiant San Pedro, Ca ----- Original Message ----- From: Helen Horn<mailto:he… [at] sbcglobal.net> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com<mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, April 09, 2012 6:46 PM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Cal 36 upgraded rudder Hi guys! The small skeg in front of the rudder is a crab pit deflector. Just keep it as it deflects lines from getting wedged between rudder and hull. Have you tried Foss foam for your rudder? They have the cal40 rudder, the 36 may be the same? -- Helen Horn <he… [at] sbcglobal.net> wrote: Hi guys! My conclusion was that the "crab pit deflector" could work, but only if the rudder were perfectly aligned behind it. This might occur DDW, at times. Under power, it might also work, some of the time. Up wind, with a bit of weather helm, the rudder would rarely align squarely behind that little strut. That was just my opinion, as I hit mine with a hammer and dispensed with it. I still haven't caught a "crab pot", but I'm here in SoCal. Kelp is our main issue, and it seems to shed rather easily from our keel and rudder. Our boat still has its crab pOt deflector. Have only whacked it with my head when I removed the rudder, and never with a hammer. (Ouch!) Figured somebody had a good reason to put it there if only to teach me to duck. -- Fin Beven <fi… [at] msn.com> wrote: My conclusion was that the "crab pit deflector" could work, but only if the rudder were perfectly aligned behind it. I'm not sure if this answers your question, but it might help. http://www.boatrudder.com/ Foss foam built most of the new Cal-40 rudders. I do not think that the Cal-40 class would accept that rudder for class racing. http://www.daysailer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1983 Fin Beven Cal-40 #24 Radiant San Pedro, Ca ----- Original Message ----- From: Helen Horn To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, April 09, 2012 6:46 PM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Cal 36 upgraded rudder Hi guys!
