Cal 27 rub rail cap
alschill2012-12-04 19:22
Hi
I'm a new owner of an old Cal 27 (pop top).
One of the end caps for the rub rail is missing, so I'm hoping to get some leads to a replacement part.
Made of brass (cast).
Hopefully I'll figure out how to attach a photo...
Al

Al,
Those caps are hard to find, best bet is probably a derelict Cal. You can try D&R Marine, they have a lot of Cal stuff. I was lucky, Roger Jones just happened to have a set and he gave them to me. Everytime I walk down the dock and see my Cal I remember Roger, he is missed.

Al,
Try Steve Seals http://www.sealsspars.com/gunnelcatalog.html
I bought new rub rail for my Cal 29 from him. Looks like he's selling anodized aluminum end caps for Cal 20's up through Cal 34's.
Regards,
Ken

Al,
I'm not sure if the caps on a CAL2-27 are the same but I think I have at least one in a tote of mixed parts. I will look and see; I should be at the boat this afternoon for a quick solo sail.

What size is it and location of holes? Looks like a piece of C channel made in bronze. you could try a metal yard. If they do not have that size in bronze they should have it in aluminum. If they have it in either they will cut it to the length you need then just drill and countersink.

I agree. From time to time something reminds me of Roger, somebody I
never met in person but appreciated from afar. I'm always grateful for
the signed plans for my treasured Cal 20.
It's interesting how those memories get summoned up. I was driving to
our schooner organization's Christmas party tonight and Strauss's /Der
Rosenkavalier/ suite was on the radio. Years ago I had a law student
intern, an older guy who raised 8 daughters with his wife and then went
to law school. One winter day he called me at work in south-central
Michigan from his vacation place in northern lower Michigan. "Chris,"
he said, "it's snowing like crazy, there's a fire in the fireplace and
Rosenkavalier is on the stereo!" The image always comes to mind when I
hear that music.
