Re: [Cal_Boats] glassing a rudder?

Hi Reggie, I would not trust 1 layer to protect the rudder. 8oz is pretty
thin. I would gauge the thickness of what was original and go from there. I
would guess 3 or 4 layers minimum. It is just as easy to do 4 as it is 1.
Every layer after is a little smaller than the previous one. Makes fairing
easier. Best to do them all at the same time for best bond/strength. Fell

I gouged out the bad stuff from one side of the rudder. about 1/4 of the
original glass skin was sacrificed. two part pourable hard urethane foam
was poured in to expand for filler, then sculpted for shape. I have glassed
the outside with one layer of 8oz cloth and epoxy. I tried working with
plain glass mat, but I have no skills or techniques for it. I can do the
cloth with slow set hardener.
Opinion time: Is one layer of 8oz glass enough, then barrier coat and
bottom paint?

Reg, I also thought that a single layer would be too thin. However, I have bought a couple rudders from Foss Foam (CA) over the years, and the skin on them was indeed very thin. Daniel, I am not sure those rudders have enough skin thickness to do the beveling one would want to do to the shrinking size layering.
My conclusion is a big question mark. Dunno.
Thanks
Charlie
