Speaking of drifting powerless . . . I'd actually rather be working on my boat than sailing in light air. "They say light air makes the sailor," but IMHO they don't finish the sentence . . . makes the sailor crazy / frustrated / bored / impatient / thirsty / hungry / hot / sweaty / late. I know, I know . . . it takes way more skill to make a sailboat move in light air, it's just not my thing. I'd just rather be white knuckled on the tiller/wheel than waiting for a puff to fill my sails. Actually I'd rather be working on my boat than 1,000 other things I have to do but that's another story. Paul In a message dated 2/14/2013 12:09:50 P.M. I just think we can have higher expectations for sailors than for ordinary humans. The news about the driftng, powerless cruise ship makes me grin. No air conditioning, no cabin toilets, sandwiches for food. Gee, that's what we do for fun! Maybe there is a difference--we also get wet & cold. So if we are tough enough to get wet & cold for fun, we ought to be able to tackle a repair job, especially if it gives us the privilege of enjoying sailing--one of life's miracles--at a price we can afford. It can be fun when there's enough air to actually move the boat but frustrating as hell when the seas--or worse, powerboat wakes--make the sail & boom flop around with out shape. My other boat lives in an area with lots of huge roaring power boats. They scream out of the river into the Bay and then turn around and go back. Whee. It always gives me one reason to be grateful for high gas prices. > I'd just rather be white knuckled on the tiller/wheel than waiting for > a puff to fill my sails. But often enough we get it just right--the wind is perfectly matched to the sails we've selected, and the boat moves along around hull speed, and all is right with the world. Chris Campbell
