I know that the CAL 21 had a hole drilled in the upper pintle to insert a
cotter-pin to keep the rudder from popping off. Still it is a good idea
to remove the rudder and lay it in the cockpit when not sailing,
especially before going ashore. For even greater security, put the rudder
below in the cabin. Keeping the rudder out of the weather helps to
preserve the finish (especially if, like ours, the rudder is kept bright
finished). Taking the rudder out of the water when not sailing allows it
to dry out between uses (less chance of rot) and means a lot less wear
and tear on the pintles and gudgeons (not to mention the rudder and
tiller themselves). Saves having to put antifoulant on the rudder too!
