Diesel filters
Alex Kunadze2013-02-16 22:01 UTC
Hi all,
I just found out that the diesel filters on my boat have been chosen in a
rather strange way. The primary Racor 120 is 2micron, while the on-engine
Napa filter is 10micron. This just doesn't make sense to me... What would
be a good setup? The engine is a Beta 3cyl. I'm thinking either 30/10 or
10/2...
Cheers,
Alex.
PS: I would really appreciate a quick response, as I need to change them
tomorrow morning.

If your fuel tank has recently been cleaned or drained of all sludge,
use a 10 micron primary filter element. If not, install a 30 micron.

Joe,
I have always referred to the filter on the engine as the primary, the
external filter as the secondary. This is the way someone told me
mannnny years back. Is this correct, or is the other way around the
right way?
Confused, and want to be right...

Hi Carl -
If you are in the USA, the primary fuel filter is the filter closest
to the fuel tank, the secondary filter is immediately before the
engine's fuel injection system.
The opposite is correct if you live in Canada.
This is similar to the USA standard of "diesel engine". [ an engine
produces power, a motor consumes power ]
When in Italy, the standard is "diesel motor". [ "diesel motori" in
Italiano ]
Another interesting bit -
Diesel engines do not have throttles, they have fuel controls.

Well, I guess I've been sort of in error all along. I'm on Lake
Champlain, only 80 miles from Montreal. Maybe someone from Canada was
the person who told me. I did know about the fuel control, though.
Thanks,
Carl
