Furler / forestay question

Kool Beans2013-03-06 18:28 UTC
Greetings All! I am happy to report that I'm investing a lot of boating bucks into Kool Beans this year and I'm very excited about this years upgrades! The first major project I'm doing is that I invested boating bucks into a new furler, replacing my old Stay Stream furler with a new CDI furler with ball bearings. That would mean that I would have to install a new forestay as well. I need to know the correct length of the forestay, for the sail loft where I purchased the furler needs to be assured of the correct length. Today, I measured 37' 9", pin to pin (center). Is that correct? The sail loft says that my forestay should measure 39'. Any advice from Cal 2-29 owners? I am also invested boating bucks into a new main sail, head sail with UV protectors that is on the sail and a new sail cover. I will keep the group informed of additional upgrades that will be coming! Thank you to all in advance for any information! Sailing season is almost upon us here on the frozen tundra (Lake Ontario) and I'm itching to get in the water! Hope all is well and are all safe! Happy and safe sailing! The old varnish suffered a complete film failure at the end of the summer. I have stripped, bleached, chemically stained with washing soda solution, and pigment stained with mahogany filler stain. The first coat of varnish went on last night. Have you priced spar varnish lately? Yikes! The real barrier to launching may be placement in the storage yard. Little /Martha C/ on her trailer is behind two vast wooden powerboats on stands. I've been eyeballing the situation to see if we can squeeze her through. Chris Campbell

Have the loft come make the measurements. When the thing comes in wrong and they say it is because you measured it wrong you will wish you had. When you say you measured it just the way the Cal_Boats list told you to measure it and they say, "you did what?", you will wish you had them do it. Jim, Your pin to pin measurement is close to what mine was when I put on a Harken furler a few years ago. However, I agree with the advice that you should have the sail loft measure it. Not only will they be at risk if it is wrong, but they do this all the time. Hey Jim, Did you go local to you for the new sails? I did a few years ago because they made the ones that came with my Cal 25 over 30 years ago when they had their loft in Ithaca. Good folks there. Recutting a monster jib for me soon. Hi everyone! Thank you everyone again for the quick response to my question. I took the mast down for the winter, because I knew I would be replacing the bearings in the furler. I took the furler off the mast and had it laying flat on the ground for measurement. I will measure again to make sure that I read the tape corrrectly. Could it be possible that the p/o had the mast raked forward to eliminate weather helm? There seems to be some weather helm, but it was not excessive. I will measure the forestay again to be sure. I will consult with the sail loft again before I give them the final dimension. Again,, thank youto all for all your great advice! I also upgraded the furler with the optional ball bearing kit. Have a great day and please be safe! Hi Kevin! I went to a sail loft that is approximatley one hour and forty minutes west of where I live. The sail loft is located in Barker, NY. For being my first time visit to a sail loft, it was a pleasurable one. The owner spent a little over two hours with me explaining a lot of stuff to me and giving me advice. I hope that your monster jib turns out to be awesome for you! Thank you for your interest! Hi Kevin I would remove the forestay and support the mast with extra rope ect halyard I have done this before and a rigger would do the same. 1. measure the old forestay on the hard ground do it twice to make sure you correct measurement Nail thru the toogle and pull tight is best you want it streched out 2. Have forstay made and allow for strech of the cable 3 Install new forestay and fuler. Each boat is not exactly the same so best to measure your own Do it right the first time and no problems later my 2 cents Scott From: Kool Beans <ne… [at] hotmail.com> To: ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 10:29 PM Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Furler / forestay question Hi Kevin!
