What is the best Engine Bed material (lag bolts or thru bolts?)
sscot122013-03-07 16:21
Im installing an engine in 2-29 and need to make
a new or modified engine bed this is for a re-built 2qm15
th beds have to about to be 1.5 to 2.0 wider for the new yanmar
mounts. The yanmar mount are on 14" centers the old ones where 17"
One idea is a threaded steel plate mounted to the stringers
and no lag bolts used on the mounts the mounts are thru-bolted
Idea l shaped G-10 and thru bolted saw this on the internet
I have seen douglas fir, g-10, steel ect any ideas please
thanks
scott

Iroko? That would be ironwood. Heavy stuff.
But it doesn't rust.

I switched out to a Yanmar 2GM20F in 2005. My installer used an aluminum plate mounted on the old stringers which had to be trimmed down a bit.

If I knew then what I know now when installing my Yanmar 2GM instead of adding material to the engine beds I'd have just had new mounting tabs/L-brackets made for the Yanmar that reach out to the existing beds.
I sistered oak panels to the inside of the existing stringers with four lags from the inside to the old bed. I dowelled the old mounting holes, and then glassed it all up beginning with a finely woven mat and finished off with a courser mat that more matched the "stock" mat used on the hull.
The Yanmar mounts were too high, so I opted for lower-profile mounts, and had to notch the new material on the starboard side for clearence for the water pump.
If I had it to do over again, or the best advice I can give to someone swapping a Yanmar 2-series into a Cal 29 would be to just have new mounting brackets for the Yanmar made that reach to the stock engine bed rather than narrowing the engine bed to match a couple of bent pieces of metal bolted to the block....
After the swap I ended up going with something like a 13x13 three-blade right-hand prop; lots of torque and digs right in; not as fast but still motor with wet feet....
BTW, I have a couple of custom couplers I had made for my old Farymann laying around if anyone needs or wants to replace the old vulcanized rubber ones. I'll let them go $200 for the pair plus shipping (FOB Long Beach) --> http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cal_Boats/photos/album/2056938998/pic/423692504/view
And if I can find them I have some old Farymann manuals, including one in German, that I'll let go free to a good home.
