We made the sail number larger than normal as I was afraid it would be lonely and lost normal size. It still looks small. Mariposa has a four digit sail number, which is rare enough to draw comment in our fleet. A one digit sail number is super cool. My main competitor in our fleet is #71. His was the last one built so everyone else has a lower number. I was basically following his lead in just putting the hull number on the sail. I could have put L-36 and 5 but was told that is only done on the main. The second owner kept it and so did we, for two reasons: (1) lack of imagination, and (2) the name was affixed by glued-on plastic letters on the transom. Although I general don't favor novelty names for my boats, we've owned her as "Baker's Dozen" for 45 years now and I've become attached to the name. Cal 20 #1220 has a good substantial 4-digit number signifying a huge marketing success (and a wholly deserved one). Chris Campbell > >

Wilkie, My 29 also has a 4 digit sail #, actually quite common here in the Midwest. Used to be that the racing org issued those; mine starts with a 5, indicating it was a Detroit number. Chicago numbers began with 6. As an RC member trying to record finishes I love the low numbers! I believe T-10s use their hull # as a sail # also. Great timing....just about to become race registered....PHRF-NW over here on the west coast...are they issuing numbers for the sails or do I consider my HIN? And what numbers from that series is good?
