I believe US Sailing will assign sail numbers. They used to be geographic, for example my Cal 29 was raced in Detroit, and carries a sail # of 5443, The 5 as the first digit indicated the Detroit area organizing authority. I think Chicago boats started with 6. I don't know what they do now, go to their website, I'm sure it's there.

Maybe....but "56" is not a "Racing Sail Number", like the number assigned
to a boat by the IRU (International Racing Union or whatever the current name
is). "56" is the CAL Hull#, and this is the number that would be on the sail to
indicate that, (our old CAL 21 had "285" on the sail, since that was her
hull#). The CAL # would be used if you were racing "one-design" , aka...in a CAL
28 Class regatta, but would not be used (usually?) for handcap racing, ie:
several different designs racing in the same overall class. The PUR number will
be assigned by the rating authority for the regatta. I believe that assigned
number stays with the boat for further regattas? (I'm not a racer)

Wow!! Excelent! Thank you very much. So if I'm going to use this number as
the reference to have it printed in the sails for regatta purpuses, my number
will be PUR056, right?

PHRF may require you to use their 5 digit numbers. Each region is assigned a block of numbers to use. You can try your hull number, but chances are they will say No because hull numbers may be duplicates. Since we only race one design, our local CAL 25s use hull numbers. It's great because I can immediately know how old the boat is, its interior layout and the like based on hull number. We have on guy who brought the bat from Dtroit many years ago. He has the 4 digit number starting with a 5. That harkens back to the old IOR/MORC days before PHRF was a glint in its daddy's eye.

Here on the Chesapeake Bay, I'm allowed to use my 4 digit sail number (HIN) for PHRF. So far I have exclusively raced my Cal 25 as Cruising One Design (COD) but I am PHRF registered in case we decide to go out for any other races as practice, or take a stab at the Maryland Gov. Cup. Of course, I wouldn't entertain ideas of Gov Cup in a Cal 25 if a certain Mr. Husar would agree to race (or lend) his Cal 40 for the event.

Hi, Scott. Did PHRF do any checks for duplication of numbers? Don't know how many 1651s there might be.
On the boat names discussion, the original name of CAL 25 1620 was "Pilgrim".
Have a friend who has a CAL 25 named "Cio Thog" (sp?). It is Gaelic for left handed (which he is). From a distance it looks just like "Sh*t Hog". So that's what we call her.
Cheers

Re: [External] RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Sail Numbers

The T-10 I race on in the winter in PHRF has a 3 digit sail number. The
L-36 that raced PHRF, and won the season, has a 2 digit sail number. I
just submitted my PHRF form and indicated that my sail number is 5. When I
race I actually tell the RC that my sail number is L-36 5 because they used
to screw it up and record my time as sail number 36, which was someone
else. I am in SF Bay so NCPHRF rules. I am unaware of any restrictions on
sail number but I guess I will find out. They meet on my boat on Thursday.
