Speaking of Insurance

Husar, Charlie [USA] (ASE)2013-03-26 18:11 UTC
Well, I guess we weren't so I will. Couple weeks ago, I got an E-Mail from Boats US talking about all the problems they'd had with flooding and storms in the East. Oh, oh thought I. They'd only send out this kind of message if they intended to raised rates. I sent a note asking how much that might be. No answer. Yesterday I got my bill. Up by 33 percent on my CAL 40. Cheers, Anyway Charlie

Your boat may be properly secured for storm conditions but the expensive one in the next slip isn't, and the owner seems not to care. "I've got insurance for that." Or worse, the improperly secured one damages the properly secured ones. One nice thing about the low value of many fiberglass boats is that our investment is smaller and we can take risks like going uninsured for damage. Maybe not on a 40, but on a 20, it's a manageable risk. I'd be devastated if my pretty boat were lost or damaged, but insurance companies don't pay for my hurt feelings, just for the boat's value. Whenever I think about insurance, I am reminded of Oscar Wilde's observation about the kind of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. There's a huge discrepancy between the two on my sweet Cal 20. Chris Campbell >

Insurance companies take the cake for under-handed ways to seperate you from your money. I guess I should be happy we haven't had anything like that on the West Coast.
