Cal 40 Re-Coring Project

Hi everyone first time poster... I have a 1966 Cal 40 that I just purchased and she needs her deck's re-cored. What I understand the original material used was plywood.... 1>Is this correct? Or did they use Balsa? So my question/s; for structure integrity is it better to replace the core with plywood or can I use end-grain balsa. If I use balsa will I retain the integrity as designed. Thanks Dale

If your not going to use plywood, and use balsa instead, why wouldn't you just make the jump to a foam core. Lighter weight... Plywood, however, is very strong stuff. Dale, all the deck cores on Cals were playwood, as far as I know. Charlie Husar is our resident recoring expert. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. Jerry of Cal 24 Mk 1 Shpritz. PS: Woo hooo.!! We had a race last night, and Shpritz nailed the start, lead the fleet until the faster boats caught and passed me one by one, tacking up the long main channel, but we stayed in the hunt by making really fast tacks. Sailing back tho, after rounding the detached breakwater and the first olympic buoy, and heading towards the South entrance, we got our Jib poled out quickly and poured it on, passing one boat after another, kinda like Mark Brothers Horse Feathers. We were 10 seconds corrected behind the lead boat at the end, but I think I was given the wrong handicap for the race. It was fun.
