Setting up a spinnaker on Cal 39
slavanaway2013-04-10 13:27
My boat was not setup for spinnaker.
I have added a topping lift, down haul, 3-1 mast track for the pole. Got a pole and dual car setup all installed. I have only one set of winches in the cockpit for jib and spinnaker.
I have a mark 3 with the aluminum toe rails. I want to use them for the turning blocks, at least initially til I determine the best setup and have time for installing foot blocks or ???
Any suggestions, and pictures are best, for the turning blocks.
I will most likely run dual sheets and guys.

I recommend snatch blocks. See http://schaeferhardware.com//SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=253 for some photos.
A less expensive choice that doesn't provide the "flexibility" may be. http://www.apsltd.com/c-435-harkenmidrangeblocks.aspx
Whatever you decide on, don't buy the least expensive. Go one size larger than recommended, and buy good quality stuff. Personally, I prefer Schaefer.
As for winches, I not sure what to say. Without a second set of winches, hoisting/dousing the spinnaker will be cumbersome. You may need to douse/furl the genoa then hoist the spinnaker. It's a lot easier to hoist/douse a spinnaker when the genoa is out as shields the spinnaker from airflow going up/down.

I am new to spinnakers myself. My "coach" told me to replace the snatch
blocks with regular blocks as he has blown up snatch blocks because the
load is double on a turning block. He has a T-10 with a much smaller
spinnaker than I have and I assume your Cal-39 has an even larger one than
mine.
If you are trying to stay with single winches, you are probably going to
need four rope clutches. Better to get two more winches.

All I can tell you is what we do, and it has worked well for us. We have a sheet and afterguy on each side.
Our foreguy is double ended, with a single block on the pole attached with a snap-shackle. This leads two twin blocks on the foredeck, approximately half way between the headstay and forward edge of the cabin. The foreguy(s) then run down each side-deck, back to the cockpit, so that the fore-guy can be adjusted from either side. As it is double ended, it has the side-benefit of 2:1 purchase at the pole. Much easier to adjust.
The afterguys are lead to the rail at the approximate widest point on the boat, then directly back to the cockpit winches.
The sheets are lead to the rail at about the middle of the cockpit, then directly to the winches. We do not lead spinnaker sheets to the stern unless we are going to be on a long reach, maybe 10 miles or more. This reduces unnecessary chafe on the underside of the boom, and eliminates the need for fixed turning blocks, which must be over-sized because the load on them is double, and turning blocks also add unnecessary friction.
With the Cal-40, we have never used anything heavier than a common snatch-block when we occasionally sheet the spinnaker sheet to the stern. Never had a problem in 30 years. They are good-quality turning blocks.
Our larger winches are relatively forward in the cockpit, for a more direct lead for either the genoa sheets or afterguys.
Our smaller winches are mounted farther aft, for the spinnaker sheets.

Looks good. I want to minimize the additions to the side deck if possible. The Cal 39 does not have a lot, especially near the cockpit.
Did you buy them of have them made?

Fin,
Thanks for the pics. I will try the block, probably not snatch as I will not be taking them on and off real often.

Do you know where I can get a set of good used ST winches?
Anytime the line goes past 90 degrees loads dramatically increase that's why the fairlead to the winch idea is appealing. It also makes it easier to trim I would think.

Sam,
Osprey is a friends boat but I'm pretty sure the turning blocks were
there when he bought her.
I would think a SS fabricator could bend some 1/8" (or so) stainless
sheet that you could through bolt to the deck/combing.
You would probably need the largest Shaefer cheek blocks to handle the
2x sheet loads.

I use Garhauer foot blocks to turn my jib sheets. They are a lot stronger
than cheek blocks.
http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=31
When I made my pad for the foot block, I created a little script to
calculate the dimensions so that the line will run true. It may be of
interest although I will be the first to say it is not very well written.

Tell me about the definitions of foot block & cheek block. Does the
boot block have the 4-bolt pattern, or some other distinction?
I would normally rather kiss a cheek than a foot but when it comes to
blocks, using the right one is a good idea.

The foot blocks are much stronger with bolts going through both the top and
bottom plates including one in the center through the sheave. I think the
ones I got had 5 3/8 bolts. You won't find that on a cheek block.
