That makes me feel better. I only have the Cal 39, a 21' Wellcraft with a 150 merc and a Hobie 16. The latter 2 are in desperate need of maintenance. Paul In a message dated 4/17/2013 10:53:38 A.M. Then there's the sea kayak I built, a rowing shell, and a 1962 Glaspar I/O runabout with a Volvo-Penta Aquamatic 80 h.p. gas engine and manual-lift outdrive. And I also tend a 14' aluminum Cadillac boat, a 13' Duratech aluminum pram (looks like this one: http://www.duratechboats.com/pb/wp_f1bdb4da/images/img308474b4d2cae6c9f8.jpg), and a Sunfish from about 1960. There's also an elderly Grumman canoe, a retiree from a rental fleet. It's hard to have too many boats. Chris Campbell

Apart from a spot where the gunwale extrusions filled with water that froze & expanded, and ignoring a slightly dull finish from oxidation, it's structurally like new. The Duratech pram has a few dents, and once the neighbors left it too low on the beach after borrowing it and it washed onto some rocks, requiring a couple small welds, but it's serviceable after maybe 56 years. The canoe is of unknown vintage and came with some weld repairs from repeated encounters with rocky river bottoms. Every material has its limitations, but for freshwater boats, aluminum is virtually indestructible and as close to maintenance-free as anything can be. Aluminum is notoriously difficult to paint. I always laugh because about 40 years ago, my brother painted some swimming raft deck boards by laying them across the gunwales of the Cadillac boat. The paint drips have adhered tenaciously ever since. And when the boat came out of the factory 58 years ago, it had some grease-pencil marks at the bow that are still evident. If I had wanted the paint to stick or the grease pencil to remain legible, they would have been gone in 6 months from the weather. Chris Campbell > Paul > In a message dated 4/17/2013 10:53:38 A.M. Hi Chris Helen They used to "Say the man with the most toys wins" I have one boat the 2-29 that has been the heart arche and gem right under re-power and taking the heat so I'm proceeding on the project almost daily now to ask white or grey for the engine cave and the gortex packing is it worth it. White for the engine cave as it is nice to have a much reflectivity as possible when you need it . . . hopefully you won't need it after the re-power for a long time. Yes, the gortex packing is worth every penny. my 2 cents Paul From: scott <ss… [at] yahoo.com> To: Cal_Boats <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sun, Apr 21, 2013 8:03 pm Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] The other boat Hi Chris Helen They used to "Say the man with the most toys wins" I have one boat the 2-29 that has been the heart arche and gem right under re-power and taking the heat so I'm proceeding on the project almost daily now to ask white or grey for the engine cave and the gortex packing is it worth it.
