Typically; The HIN was in one of 2 formats: CABxxhhhMyym or CABxxhhhmmyy In either case, CAB = CAL Boats xx = Model designation (25, 27, T2, 29, etc) hhh = Hull Number or Class# (number of boats of that model built) Myym = Model year Format, where yy = model year (ie: M77 == 1977 Model year) In that format, m = code letter for month (A = August, B = September, C = October) and Model years ran August to July (example, 1977 Model year ran Aug 1976 to July 1977). mmyy = Alternate Format (used in early-mid 1970s by CAL) where mm = Month (01 = Jan, 02 = Feb, .....12 = Dec) and yy = Year (77 for 1977) The 12-digit HIN was used starting with the 1973 Model Year. Prior Model years CAL marked each boat with a Hull# only, and it was marked on the INSIDE of the transom, usually offset to starboard, marking looks like a number (usually 3-digit) printed on a piece of paper and covered by a thin layer of fiberglass cloth. Hull# also was marked on drawers in Galley and any other loose parts. Now, there is one complication in the Hull#s, and that is that CAL (actually, JENSEN MARINE) had 2 Factories, building boats at the same time one in Marlboro, NJ (1967-80) and one in Costa Mesa, CA (1959-80). East Coast (NJ) boats had Hull#s starting with Even Numbers (235, 454, 602, etc) and West Coats (CA) boats had Hull#s starting with odd numbers (185, 354, 555 ,etc.) Not all models were built at both plants, but I know NJ Plant built the 20, 21, 25, 28,29, 2-46, perhaps others, West Coast plant built all models for shipment to West Coast Dealers, and any models not built in NJ for East Coast Dealers. The complication is that there is no way to really tell how many boats total were built, since the hulls were numbered as they came off 2 production lines at the same time, so.... who knows whether CAL 21 Hull # 300 was built before or after Hull# 285 (our old boat). Production was exclusively in Florida from 1980 until moved to Fall River, MA around 1985 (O'DAY Plant). For those years, only one set of Hull#s was used for each Model. The last two digits indicate year built. Which numbers indicate Hull number?
