Cal 28 mast base plate & hull ID
ewan.anderson2013-06-13 15:44
Hi all,
Just bought a Cal 28 and I have a long list of upgrades (and fixes, of course). Among those is installing a halyard organiser plate under the mast base. Does anyone have photos of one of these on a Cal 28 with turning blocks, vang, etc attached?
Second part: does anyone know where to find a hull number for a Cal 28, likely manufactured by CalGan Marine in North Van? The boat came with no papers... I love a good mystery!
Cheers,
Ewan

What year is your cal 28?
I have a 1964 Cal 28 flattop and machined a deck plate out of stainless
steel to fit under my aluminum tabernacle. I also machined a g10 plate to
sit between the two to prevent galvanic corrosion.
I can post pictures tonight.

I can send pictures for a CAL 25 if you need. The real trick is in placing the deck organizers. Do you have mast dimensions (section width and length)?
Take Care

Adam: I don't have the tools or skills to machine my own parts, so I'm
trying to source something out locally (would be great to do that sort
of thing on my own though...). I have no idea what year my boat is -
probably one of the 300 Cals built in North Vancouver by Al Nairne.
I've posted a few photos of the boat; I'll post a few more after
haul-out this weekend. There's another Cal 28 ('Late Riser') with a
base plate at my marina...I'll post a photo in my album "Cal 28 'Kali'".
Charlie: rough measurements are 7 x 41/2" at the base. I thought there
would be specs for a standard mass section for Cal 28s online, but I
couldn't find them. I'm definitely curious about what other Cal owners
have done, so I'd love to see some photos.

Check the mast base plates that are available through Seal's Spars. That is where I got one for my Cal 2-29.

Ewan
FWIW Rigrite lists a 4060 MORC mast section it lists as being used on the Cal 28. That would be a 4" x 6" cross section. Rigrite also lists mast plates by size in another area on its website.
Good luck
