$600 is a rip-off. Do some home work to find which pumps are compatible and shop at tractor supplies and such - I don't know much about the Westerbeke 30, but do know that most of the older Westerbeke's are simple industrial (tractor) engines made by Perkins that they have "Marinized". The coolant circulating pump is not part of the marinization and should be available at "normal" cost once you start looking outside of marine supplies.

A quick search on the internet shows the W30 or 4-91 is a Leyland 4/25 - a very popular engine used in Taxis in London. The waterpump is part number A-12H3202 and can be had for around $350 based on hits on the web. Here's one: http://www.dealsinapinch.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=A-12H3203&cvsfa=3440&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=412d31324833323033&gclid=CMTbtKvtkLgCFYJxOgodVWEATQ

I saw an article where one sailor used an electric pump for his fresh water pump. Might work. I have the same engine (1975) and had the same failure in 2009. Happily this is not as expensive as most of the other components on the Westerbeke engines. I had the pump rebuilt by Commercial Water Pump Rebuilders in Houston, Texas (http://waterpumpkit.com/) The cost was $101.50 and I think about $30 for shipping. Turn around time was a couple of weeks. Good luck -- *Michael R. Boyte* *mi… [at] geekboys.com Our Blog: http://LittleCunningPlan.com*

Thanks to all. The pump can be rebuilt, but it needs to have the outside pieces press fit. It takes a special jig to do this. Someone mentioned using an electric pump. While this could work for the raw water cooling, this pump fits directly to the block, and only has one hose connection. The pump is off to Van Ness Engineering in N.J. for repair. I'll report back when the pump is returned. -- Carl

Be careful when you get it back. I used them for a few rebuilds. On one he sent me someone elses pump with a bent shaft. (He told me it was someone elses pump, I am not guessing on this). On another the pin that holds the pulley on was not through the shaft and the pulley fell off in shipping. The reason that I had so many redone with him was that they didn't pump water so I had to keep sending them back. That is why I suggested Depco pumps. They did a fantastic job and was where I ultimately got pumps that worked. I hope your luck is better than mine was. That said, they rebuilt my engine last year and likely did the pump and it pumps water so maybe they are better. The engine runs great now. The only problems I had with the rebuilt engine was that it leaked oil, gas, and water through the head gasket. Oh, and it quit completely one day but that was just the distributor condenser. Other than those minor issues, and a hugely overly optimistic schedule, it went well. Allen On Wed, Jul 3, 2013 at 8:22 AM, Carl <sa… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > ** > > > Thanks to all. I realize this is a late reply, but wanted to share some experiences re: We$terbeke$. Westerbeke bought Universal about the time the Atomic 4 gasser was phased out. They branded Kubotas as Universals. Good reliable engines, but part$$$. I am helping a long time boating friend, who has cancer, sell his O'Day 28 with a Universal M12 diesel. The re-circulating pump was beyond repair. Westerbeke/Universal wanted $307 for the pump. By going to my local Kubota tractor dealer, I was able to get the same pump for $124. I feel everyone should be entitled to a fair profit, but ...$307 vs. $124. I recently heard the same thing, that the engine is just a Kabota. Someone re-powered their boat and took a stock Kabota engine and just swapped the marine parts over to it. Sounds like there isn't too much that has to be changed. If you want a chuckle....our Catalina 27 had a Universal diesel. I needed a thermostat for it and Westerbeke wanted something like $80 for a thermostat (a part on a car that is $8). I was young and poor. At the time I was working for Robertshaw controls. I contacted our thermostat division and the guy said "Give me the dimensions and temp rating and I'll see what fits". Ends up the thermostat for a 1966 Simca fit perfectly. He sent me a couple. Hello tom Read your reply with water pump I saw a pix of your cal 46 on the web I would like to design an arch for solar and wind generators and antenas For my aft deck. Would appreciate any better pix of your aft arch, as well as some changes You have done on your starboard bunk Thx in advance Edwin Matias Cal Cruising 46 hull no 5 Lahlia Marina del Rey CA On Jul 10, 2013, at 7:56 AM, Tom Vandiver <bs… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > I realize this is a late reply, but wanted to share some experiences re: We$terbeke$.
