Splash Day

david dobbs2008-07-09 04:39 UTC
Listees, I'm finally going in the water tomorrow. The long rudder saga should be over. The new rudder is in place, VC-Tar'd, VC17'd. The Foss rudder looks fast. I don't race my boat, but I will try to evaluate it's performance. I crew on a race boat so I get to break stuff there. I will motor from below the O'Brien Lock, 9 miles up the Calumet River to the open lake, and six miles from Cal breakwater to Jackson Park Harbor, and into my slip. Weather is projected as sunny, NW winds below 10K, waves less than 1 foot. Perfect for motoring. My mast is on the storage rack at my club, waiting for us. This day is the most fun day of the year, because the season is in front of you, and all things are possible. You're on your boat, underway, and you're free of the land. Splashed yesterday, checked everything, yard guys discovered the water pump is leaking at the shaft seal. No problem, small leak, we can deal with it later. Long trip up the Little Calumet River, dodging barges all the way. The river is busier than I have ever seen it, all sorts of industrial activity. Out the mouth, 1 mile to the breakwall, through the opening and it's 20K from the NE, nasty lumps for 6 miles to my harbor. Half mile from home the alternator belt starts squealing, on and off. We made it, but I am pulling the pump on Saturday, at least new shaft seals. Oberdorfer pump, Atomic 4 late model. Suggestions? David Dobbs, CAL29 411

David - This guy is the go to guy on the Chesapeake for Atomic 4's. He is 83 yrs old and still working on them! I got his email off a comment on a web list so I can't be 100% sure it is correct but his name is Will Sibley and you can email him at 'sh… [at] comcast.net'. He should be able to answer your question(s). http://www.depcopump.com/ Depco did both my pumps, the main and the spaire. Worked great. That was after going back and forth with a rebuilt pump that just would not pump water, came back with a bent shaft, came back with the pulley not connected, from a very respected Gray marine rebuilder (not Depco). Depco did a great job and the labor cost was very reasonable. Highly recommended. In fact, the reason I got the extra pump was that I got so frustrated with the engine rebuilder sending me the pump back only for me to return it time and time again that I bought a junk frozen pump and had it shipped directly to Depco while still trying to get the first company to send me a good pump. It was the Depco that ended up getting my engine running again. I mean, the other rebuilt pump went in the engine one time and would work for an hour and then just stop and suddenly I am being followed by a plume of steam. I ended up sending both pumps to Depco. I write this long story because last time I just recommended them and the OP sent his pump to the other place... David: Moyer marine (moyermarine.com) is the place to go. They will sell you any part you may need from just seals to a complete rebuild kit to a new water pump. They have a new water pump that does not require lubrication (no more grease cup). When you call you will talk to Ken who is extremely knowledgeable. It is an easy replacement/rebuild.
