Re: [Cal_Boats] used sails - Randy
Randy, I think some others have answered parts of this. A .75 and a 1.5 can have the same cut. The 1.5 for your size boat is more likely cut flatter with less shoulder as you point out. Unless you have typically heavy conditions, I’d go with the .75 for your size boat. The weight is no guarantee of the cut,
I’ve been looking for some dimension layouts to see how far up different designs carry the max girth (typically 1.8J), but I have not found anything with that level of detail (anybody seen that?).
The high shoulders of a downwind chute move the drive higher, and make rolling more of a problem. Tweakers/twingers can help this a lot.
In the early days of the CAL 25, I remember a few boats that had 2+ oz very flat cut small spinnakers that we called “chicken chutes”. These were for reaching higher on what we called “government marks courses” before the days of W-L.
I have had good luck on closer reaches with a “standard” ,75 downwind chute by stretching the leading edge with a lower pole. Have to be careful to fight down the round-up characteristic very quickly. Rounding up is easy in a bit of a blow. Have not had destruction problems, but I would assume I am shortening the sail lifetime doing this sort of thing.

Charlie.
I have a question about spinnakers. Is a 1.5 oz the same diminsions as a .75 oz? Flatter cut less shoulders?

Site looks very good, Allen. Congrats. One piece of trivia. It is Bacon Sails, rather than Becon. They are only three miles from my house, so I could be of assistance to our listees and listettes if needed.
Cheers
