Cal 33-2 Engine Stop knob

Leslie Newman2013-07-30 14:08 UTC
Has anyone re-routed their engine stop so it is not under that awkward cockpit lid? I am thinking I want to move it someplace else, like over to where the engine switch and start button are located. I was wondering, on that control panel, what is that button or switch on the left side of the panel. On my panel that button (or switch) is broken and I have no idea what it is for. I was going to remove it and use that hole for the engine stop. Thoughts?

Yanmar 3GM30F. The engine stop is located under a cockpit lid that is a pita to open and I'd rather have the stop located near the ignition switch. I think I could fit it onto the panel located in the cockpit. I just need a longer cable and housing. I figure I can purchase a longer cable like in this link. I just need to go down to the boat and measure how far from the engine to that panel. http://www.griggslawnandtractor.com/servlet/the-4306/John-Deere-Fuel-Shut-dsh-off/Detail On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 10:13 AM, Joe DeMers <je… [at] mindspring.com> wrote: > ** > > > ** What engine are we discussing? > > *Joe DeMers - owner* > > Sound Marine Diesel LLC > > SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/> > > *phone & fax (860) 666-2184* > > > > On 7/30/2013 10:08 AM, Leslie Newman wrote: > > > > Has anyone re-routed their engine stop so it is not under that awkward > cockpit lid? Well, I just found this link and I guess I just buy the length that works. And figure out how I want to mount it into the panel. http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/yanmar/shopping/parts_references/stop_cable.php On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 10:13 AM, Joe DeMers <je… [at] mindspring.com> wrote: > ** > > > ** What engine are we discussing? > > *Joe DeMers - owner* > > Sound Marine Diesel LLC > > SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/> > > *phone & fax (860) 666-2184* > > > > On 7/30/2013 10:08 AM, Leslie Newman wrote: > > > > Has anyone re-routed their engine stop so it is not under that awkward > cockpit lid? Those old stop cables get rusty, and hard to pull. If the cable is mounted in the plastic control panel, the panel eventually cracks. You should mount the cable somewhere other than on the panel. There is a stainless steel cable mount that mounts onto a vertical surface, such as the cockpit well. This solves both of your problems. I have a cal 30 and the engine stop is mounted on the top right side of the engine panal. works fine but subject to being hit going in or out of the cabin. It finaly has broken. It took two years so mabie not so bad. My Cal 33 engine cover is hinged towards the bow. Unlatches and swings up, so I don't want to mount anything to the engine cover. I want the cut off near the wheel or near the ignition switch. I'll come up with something. Have you thought about using a stop solenoid? Them you just mount a button on your engine panel . The original owner of my boat relocated the stop cable to the engine panel as you were asking about. That was a long time ago and so far, no problem with the panel. I like having the shutoff near the rest of the engine controls and gauges. The cable is mounted with a couple of large SS washers that spread the load somewhat. It would also be possible to reinforce the mount with a bracket across the panel vertically from the back side, I think. We had both on our boat and I ended up getting rid of the cable. The solenoid works pretty well, and even if it doesn't, I know how to access the lever to stop it if need be. I can't believe anyone would use a steel cable. I looked at replacing my 50 year old throttle and choke cables several years ago and all I could find were steel cables. I found that mine were probably monel and cleaned them instead. Much better idea. I would not install a steel cable on a boat at least in salt water. Solenoid sounds like a much better idea. Monel cable if you can find it. Allen On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 10:53 AM, Greg vanDalen <no… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > ** > > > We had both on our boat and I ended up getting rid of the cable. I do like the idea of the stop knob on the panel and I was thinking there must be a way to re-enforce. I just checked on some solenoids and they are more costly than just purchasing a longer stop cable. Though, on Catalina's site they sell a stainless steel stop cable that costs $100 or so. But the stainless might be best for the long run. So far the solenoid kits I've seen are ~$300 unless I am looking at the wrong thing. TAD Diesels has them. Look at the Perkins 4-108 they are not that expensive Sent from my iPhone On Jul 30, 2013, at 2:54 PM, Leslie Newman <d2… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > I do like the idea of the stop knob on the panel and I was thinking there must be a way to re-enforce. I just checked on some solenoids and they are more costly than just purchasing a longer stop cable. Though, on Catalina's site they sell a stainless steel stop cable that costs $100 or so. It's true. A solenoid switch is an elegant solution to the problem. But for a variety of reasons, it isn't always effective. My engine controls are beautifully arranged in the cockpit sideboards, right next to my steering pedestal. But at least half the time, I have to go below and remove the engine cover in order to shut down power manually. Oh for the simplicity of a stop cable.
