Bimini Top dimensions for a 1987 Cal 33-2
jeep.jallade2013-07-29 14:13
I'm looking to put a Bimini top on my 1987 Cal 33-2. Does anyone out there have a Bimini, and could I possibly get the dimension's. I've measured but don't want to order one until I'm sure of these.

I own a 1986 Cal 33-2 that has a Bimini. I won't be down to the boat until
this weekend though. Would be glad to take measurements then if you still
need them.

It is mounted to the rail. If you want to send me an email I could reply
with a couple of pictures. We just bought the boat and I have a couple of
pictures we took this weekend while sailing to Onancock. An email you can
send to is d2… [at] yahoo.com

I'm sending pics. But you don't really need measurements to make your own
Bimini. I've made Bimini's. My mom had an upholstery shop when I was young.
She taught me how to make them. You buy the frame kit. Assemble that onto
the boat. Then sew the fabric together so you have a large enough piece to
drape over the frame. Now, you just pull the edges around the frame and use
some large clips to hold the fabric into shape. Mark with soap (or
something that will wash off) along the fabric where is curves around the
bows. This will be the shape you need to sew. Determine how much you want
along the sides...how far the want the fabric to extend out to the sides.
You cut and sew all that. Then you add the pockets with zippers to hold the
fabric to the bows. Cut around the stay and put a zipper there and sew
trim, etc. Not rocket science.

You are welcome. It is fun to make these things for your boat and saves
some money. But, you do need a good sewing machine and buy good strong
nylon thread that can stand up to UV. Years ago I invested in a walking
foot industrial sewing machine so I could make some repairs to my sails,
sew dodgers, bimini, etc. I bought it used and it paid for itself quickly.
When I made the dodger I had the old one and I ripped the seams so I had a
template. This is our fourth boat. All the cloth on this Cal is in good
shape, but the wheel cover zipper is shot. I'm replacing that tonight.

Found this site with fairly good prices for all sorts of upholstery items
and even Bimini hardware kits.

I made my sail cover for the Cal 20 but originally used thread from the
fabric shop. It was heavy but not UV-protected. It's giving up. Last
winter I wised up and bought UV-resistant thread from Sailrite. This
fall I'll bring the cover home and re-stitch using the good stuff.
My sewing machine is an old 1930s +/- home model--no zig-zag, no walking
foot, but it's cheap and works well enough for my purposes. If I
anticipated a lot of big canvas projects, I'd consider investing in a
fancy machine. You could then do work for others and maybe recover some
of the cost.

I have a TacSew T111 industrial model I bought more than 18 years ago. It
has sewn all sorts of things, motorcycle bags, sail covers, dodgers,
bimini's, truck seat, bulldozer seats and all sorts of repairs. It owes me
nothing.
