Paul, A stay sail should be good at 9-11 knots at 80-90° true. Higher winds you can go deeper. But like Finn Beven states. Put it up if you go faster its working. If your not, take it down. I have both. A genoa staysail and a tall boy for the kites. The genoa staysail really is my favorite is those long reaches. I find the #2 with the Genoa staysail is great in 16-20. As far as the 155 or kite goes. I was in a small race on Sunday and we raced a Capri 25. It gave us a chance to experiment. We Both rate 180 except they are 2300 lbs and we are 8500lbs. We were on a 90 degree true wind Broad reach in 4-6 knots of wind. Our boat speed was 4.6- 5.2. I opted to fly the .5 oz kite, pole forward, with a reaching strut. Our speed dropped to 3.6 and we watched them sail off. I replaced the kite with the head sail. During Long Beach Race week we had higher winds 12-15 knots at 90 degrees true on the beam and the .5 oz kite pulled us ahead of the other Cal 29 and we out pointed them with 5.6-6.7 speeds. Maybe you can play with it before the gun goes off and see what your boat likes best. Wind predictions (for what they are worth) are looking like it'll be a close to a beam reach most of the race in light air 5-10kts (not our wind). Will a staysail combined with a 155 give us more speed? Would it be better to use a small .75 oz or smaller 1.5 oz spinnaker with the staysail? We have a reaching strut if needed. We have a Cal 39 with an aluminum toe rail with holes for attaching stuff as needed. We do not have any tracks on the cabin top for smaller sails however. Hi, Paul. As usual, the answer is not simple. The "try it" advice was good. IMHO, FWIW, and YMMV. Here are a few observations. If the water is at all sloppy, the genoa holds its shape better than the chute in light air. If you are using the chute, the lighter one would be better, I think. If the wind is going forward, bring the pole down some to make the chute wind entry a bit more jib-like. Staysail use would just be based on speed. Should be useful, I think. Looks like a long slow night.
